Message Board > General Chitchat > Show ticket prices in Victoria vs. other cities.. |
korn koiler User Info... | It is funny. In other city, Montreal, Edmonton, TO, etc the average undeground band nightclub show is $10 and nobody complains. But the bands get paid well. Why is it that people always complain around here when a show isn't $5? Is it just that Victoria people live in the twilight zone of the industry standard? - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 6:49am
Livevic Scott User Info... | Yes, most of the "larger" acts that play here are underpriced as well. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 7:47am
ROSS B AY User Info... | hey we all know how it is around here. 5 bucks aint shit, either is 10. not with the price of booze the way it is. too bad. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 8:47am
METALNECK User Info... | Thats for sure. I would be glad to pay $10 for a local show if I wasn't having to pay $5 a fucking beer. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 4:14pm
Cliff Clavin User Info... | You are all cheap and dirty - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 8:16pm
XY-SATAN User Info... | Yea... and your point being ? ............and I'm really really dirty ! - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 10:50pm
Bryn User Info... | I agree... gig prices here in Victoria are totally bargain basement. Don't tell any of those bar owners or they might catch on! - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 11:49pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | It's hard to say how the prices reflect in the cost of a ticket to see a show. But the only reason the top name acts charge more money per ticket is (a) because they can :) and (B) Getting over to the Island costs a lot of money. And yes I do agree, the bars charge a little too much for ales, I tend to drink between $30-$40 in ale alone (I can't drink cheap beer, has to be Lighthouse IPA or Lighthouse Race Rocks Ale) per night, and still walk home (most of the time). If the clubs put the local microbrews products on special, it would totally help stretch the money. (eg. Logan's still charges $4.75 per sleeve of IPA, shame really) - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 12:34am
Brooke User Info... | As a musician, I cast my preference for low ticket prices. I wouldn't spend more than $5 to see a band I hadn't heard of, and really for indie bands isn't the point to get a lot of people who haven't heard you to hear you. Any extra money I'd make from higher ticket prices, I'd more than lose in paying more for shows I'm not involved in. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 12:44pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | say that when your band starts to get somewhere. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 12:53pm
Japanese Air Force User Info... | Also, the cost to put on a show can be high as well. My band always does our own posters and print 200-400 B&W and 20-40 colour. We usually rent lights, depending on where the show is, 'cause some venues don't have a decent lighting rig. Then you need to pay someone to run the lights. We often pick the opening band and pay them ourselves. Monday ads are expensive, rental gear is sometimes necessary. You get the idea. This is all in the name of making the show that much more enjoyable for the viewers. It's hard to pay for all of that, and still come out with something to pay for rent/food/gear/etc on a $5 ticket. I don't feel bad charging more than $5 for a show in Victoria, because of all the work we put into it, and I feel that we put on a quality, well rehearsed show. On the same note, I've been to shows where I've paid $7+ dollars to see a local band in Steamers (for example), and the band is drunk, out of tune, fucking up their own songs, etc. That's when I feel ripped off. ~JAF - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 2:29pm
evilkleg User Info... | What I really hate is when my friends won't come out unless I put them on the guest list, then drop $40-$60 on booze at the bar. Hey guys, how about $5 to the band so we can continue to entertain your tightwad asses! - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 3:23pm
ML7Mike User Info... | Most other big cities in Canada charge about $10 for indie bands in clubs. All Ages is usually cheap for obvious reasons. But try getting into a bar show in Edmonton/Toronto/Montreal etc for less than $10. They just arent happening as much. Canmore Hotel mind you.. they were arguing over whether to charge $2 or $3 a head and people were still complaining! haha! - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 4:23pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | *laugh* I think thats cuz they usually just have no cover and the bar pays the bands out of booze sales there Mike! However as for AA shows, in some other cities like Edmonton and Toronto the average price for local all ages shows is between $7-10 not the 5-7 it is here. We're about the same as some of the Prarie towns though like Regina and Toon town. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 4:49pm
Chris Logan User Info... | I think drink prices are pretty standard across Victoria, at least for microbrews. It might surprise people to know this, but bars aren't making very much money, if any, selling a typical microbrew at $4.75 a sleeve. Anyway.... Shows are ridiculously cheap in Victoria. We don't take a percentage off the door here, so as far as my business is concerned, it doesn't really matter what we charge. But people really shouldn't complain about seeing two or three bands for $5. Although, at the same time, I think bands who are playing venues like ours should consider it a chance to gain experience, pay for their practice space, and sock some money away for recording, not as a form of personal income. - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 8:45pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Hmmm... I shouldn't reply to Chris's post, but... Man you could charge $4 a sleeve and still make money, if I see a good deal beer wise, well I'm obviously gonna spend a lot of money there, you might lose a bit of money, but call it incentive for people to visit your establishment numerous times. It's an awesome place to see shows, and yes, I do tell people that, but c'mon, swing us a deal (perhaps mention livevictoria and get a discount?!?, it's all good man!) --- Griphin (who donated a Back in Black CD to Logans :) - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 2:00am
ML7Mike User Info... | bring on the alcohol price wars!! January isnt it? - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 11:15am
METALNECK User Info... | Bars should sell Hermanators. I was at Logans last night and found that the prices were pretty damn reasonable. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 12:06pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | I think the Herminator is only sold in huge bottles. For a bar to make money off of it, they would have to charge a minimum of $10 I think (they cost just under $8 if I can remember). I used to be a huge Hermans Dark Lager fan, but after awhile I shied away from the dark beers. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 2:09pm
METALNECK User Info... | I would most deffinately pay $10 for a hermanator in the bar. No regrets there. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 6:13pm
Chris Logan User Info... | " For a bar to make money off of it, they would have to charge a minimum of $10 I think (they cost just under $8 if I can remember)." Hermannator's a good beer, but at $8 a bottle retail, a bar would actually have to charge about 30 bucks a bottle to make money off it. That's why your best buy in a bar (at least as far as mark-up) is often the most expensive stuff--the bar can't charge what their normal margin would dictate, because it would just be too expensive. - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 6:41pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yeah I hear ya, a bottle of Cabo Wabo Blue Tequila sells in the LCB store for around $110-130 a bottle (my guess), the bars can get away with charging $9.50 per ounce. Let's do the math, taking into consideration 1-2 ounces will be spilled/wasted (sloppy bartenders, sigh :) the bar makes double that selling it. (I think, my math is horrible at the moment) - Tue, 9 Dec 2003 10:00pm
julien sorel User Info... | doesn't logan's take money out of the cover charge? - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 2:17am
ROSS B AY User Info... | nope. - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 4:26am
Chris Logan User Info... | We take a flat fee from the door to pay the soundman and the doorperson, but we don't take a percentage. The only money we make on shows is from bar sales. - Wed, 10 Dec 2003 8:51pm
