Did anyone here go to this?
It was absolutely amazing.
Every instrumentalist was a prodigy in every way possible... every single person could improvise in a stellar way and could blend into a band setting in such a way that the sound created was superior to almost anything possible.

Wynton put on an awesome show. I was seated behind the stage and he often looked back at us and involved us. I expected him to "feature" himself more in the concert but because of the calibre of musicians he chose, this was not the case. Nor did it need to be.

My jaw is still dropped from attending this and I'm quite sure I'll never forget it. World-class musicians and Wynton will definetely go down in jazz history (he's already made a huge mark). I noticed the show wasn't listed on livevictoria.. hmm.

Anyway this concert gave me a huge amount of inspiration. I have some pictures and videos. - Fri, 4 Feb 2005 2:11am

I couldn't afford to go. I saw him last two times he came through Vic and Van and enjoyed the hell out of both of them.

Good to hear it was spectacular. - Fri, 4 Feb 2005 11:25am

I'd been contemplating going since last October but in the end I just didn't have the $77 - $100 to go:(

That's dope that he played with Dan and Noah though:) I would have loved to see that - Sat, 5 Feb 2005 9:48am

Nice to hear about people so inspired by great shows like this. Remember to check out players in our own back yard though.. I don't know about in Vic, but here in Van we've got some exceptional improv jazz players.. its a crime that more people don't know about them. I'm not just saying that to be supportive - I would say there are at least a handful that I've seen who measure up to those guys. I take this stuff seriously too.

PLUS, not to trivialize, but these shows are accessible to bums like (some of) us, i.e. cheaper tickets, and way more intimate. More value, in certain ways. And none of the guys you saw would be visible by you now without the local support they got when they were starting.

Speaking of, I need to chime in with Scott, please contribute to these sites! We've got too much on our plates and these sites are so far not paying for themselves. Efforts are constantly being made so that its easier for fans to take control - thats what sets us apart. And helping to spread the word about shows which you think are worthy shouldn't be seen as work, should it? Especially since it'd take less than a minute to list a show. If you want some sort of credit, feel free to write a blurb about why you're excited and sign your name in the info panel or something, so people/the promoter know you listed/recommend it.. whatever it takes.. what WILL it take? Pro-active fans are appreciated in bigger ways than you probably know, by everyone.
just a lil suggestion. p.s. man, thats a pretty picture. - Sat, 5 Feb 2005 10:53am

those points are very valid.. yeah I was a little bit preoccupied with exams and such keep in mind but never really considered listing it

I wish I had known about him going to Hermann's after.. then again if everyone knew, it'd be a massive crowd. I have a friend who went.

I've always been sort of interested in local jazz scenes but never done a lot of exploring.

Here's another pic from the show; Wynton and his drummer. Man they had such a groove going. - Sun, 6 Feb 2005 9:19pm

That drummer made me reconsider listening to rock music alltogether, fascinating and exilarating. - Sun, 6 Feb 2005 9:47pm

that show was amazing. I'm not really the biggest Wynton fan, although he's good my 2 main inspirations are probably Miles Davis (obviously) and Maynard Ferguson. But if we're talking about local jazz we got loasds of good stuff and i don't even know much about it. We got people like Mike Herriot, Hugh Fraser, Ross Tagart, Pat coleman, Ian McDougall and many more. Although people probably already know that. Anyways getting back to the show, I'd have to say Coltrane's Love Supreme was probably my favourite part, the only problem with sitting behind the stage (like Tyler) was that the sound was not quite as good as it would have been from the front, so it's like your sitting in the trumpet section, it's just a bit harder to hear whats going on in the front, parts get burried a bit beneath the brass, so you lose a bit that way. But I still thoroughly enjoyed that. - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 9:33pm

aCk... Wynton Marsalis played and I missed it?!? For those knocking this artist down, he's probably one of the best jazz artists out there. He's worth seeing if you need a good example on decent jazz artists. Wow, $77 per ticket? Would of rather headed down to Hermann's instead, least it would of been cheaper and you could of gotten a up close view of the artist playing jazz. - Wed, 9 Feb 2005 9:43pm
