Jam_Aylott User Info... | For those of who are not literrarily "inclined".... Just Scroll down to "THE GRADE" to see a sum of the review. Alright... Who absolutly CANNOT stand it when they are writing/doing something, and then it ALL GETS DELETED because the webserver FORGOT ABOUT YOU! gah... I just wrote a 500 word review or so and it all got delted... barse... annnnYYWAY. lets start (again) with... BLACK TIE SOCIAL: From what i hear it was their first prefomance (performance? @#$% it, I cant spell, this isnt "english class). Good show guys. I really enjoyed hearing a modern twist to funk. The keyboard/sax player did a great job, it gets hectic having to deal with lots of stuff at once, unfortunatly, I didnt see to much swapping... the keyboardist basically played one or the other for each song... no worries tho, you guys still did good. I liked the opening However, your stage presence could liven up a bit. Im not saying you were cardboard boxes, but I wasnt really impaced by you, hence the word "presence." make yourselves more "PRESENT", there arent THAT many of you (comapred to a genuwine funk abnd, or a ska band) so maybe during re-hersals or practise work on some "moves." An audiance likes to be engrossed with LIVENESS and energy... even if you guys are chill, interact with the audiance more... make fun of you're MOM or do something funny, hell tell a REALLLY bad joke or SOMETHING... your PRESENCE and DELIVERY is what makes you remembered! TAKE more risks! C+ ------------ +Good first show +Cool tunes +Easy to follow -Easy to follow -Not Very "Present" +keep it up! SOLMN FIST: N/A Didn't hear it... ONE HANDED PRAYER: okay so this is my band... we didn't play very good, I @#$%ED up way more times than what is excusable. I deserve a spank ian! :( lol. We've had much better jams. whatever, progress is ineveitable. C+ ------------- +... I have a 7 string and you don't. +I have a mesa boogie head and you don't. +Ian Lougheed is sexy -Dave happens -meh - ӿ LYTHIC BLUE: ...Wow! YOU GUYS KICKED MAJOR ASS!! Don't think im blowing any sunshine up your ass either... The band has come a way since the time when Gio Linguanti played guitar for you...or at least since he apperently did. I loved every second of it, and its the best show ive ever seen you play... nothing more to say! YOU TOOK RISKS!! you JAMMED, YOU HAD FUN...I would pay 8$ just to see YOU play an hour long set! YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU! B+/A ------------- +Tight as the virgin Mary! +Sexy as the virgin marry too ;) +Great WRITTEN material +Musically and theoretically and mind bogglingly challenging to "anticipate." (I cant guess what note is "next") +awsome flow! and inbetween ness. +I will come to all of your shows FROM NOW ON if you promise to sound liek that all the time!! - ? Well, there IS one thing... I know I know... im an ass, but I MUST VOICE MY OPINION! Okay... COMPLETELY dig the complex rythem/accents. You guys totaly give off a MArs Volta / Dillenger Escape PLAN vibe and it REALLY WORKS... I would like to see more "roaming" Just jam more, tweak the songs a bit, imrpove a solo or something? you are risk takers by playing what you do... just take a few more! P.S. Good work guys, you deserve all the credit you have recived and more. Congratulations and best of luck with any goals you try to achieve in the future! and finallly... CROWNED KING: While reading a review for a game which I cannot remember, there was a quote that vivdly stuck out then, and still to this day still does. It was while reading game revolution that I sumbled upon the ideology that "(*with a southern accent drawl*) if you keep on earin dem sticks of butter, you'll forget how good dem squirrils taste." I still to this day (along with the game revolution reviewer) have no clue what that means, but it deffinatly is a cool quote anyways isn't it? Moving on, from an "eclectic" (meaning musically un biased) stand point I can appreciate Crowned king for what they do. Unfortunatly i would not pay money to specifically see them... heres Why. Ska music is very much a "pop" genre, meaning that it is very "POP"ULAR and easy to find. I would calssify blink182 as being pop, and mainstream. I am very anti mainstream. I feel that there are many other bands, who are BETTER than crowned king. For the age and amount of time they have been together (which I presume is a fairly long time) they should be much better. I would have liked to see more risk taking by the trumpets. You guys SOUNDED GREAT from the inside, but it almost sounded liek you're horns got distorted through sound nodes or something, cuz on the outside it sounded like... squirrils fighting over butter? well maybe not but still. I just get bored hearing 4/4 over and OVER again, and the same key changes (fifths, MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR) ect. Mind u it is a very PROVEN technique and WORKS... but due to the fact that I somewhat of a musician (and somewhat of an ignorant cynical, non-confomist), I just get bored! in short spice it up! PLAY SKA IN 5/4, OR 6/8!! THAT WOULD BE SO RAD!!! HAVE SOME HORN SECTION SOLOS, take off your pants (I love you lil dave, ***I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS MOMENT TO SAY THAT PUSHING UP DAISIES RULES...HAHHAAHA!), or do something that hasnt been seen before B ------------- +Good Solid performance +LOTS of band members +---Fit well with the show (other bands ect) + GREAT singer! - who sounds the same every song - Okay, so 4/4 is cool... but so is a syncopated 5! - not very "risky" I like risks - You will be better with time + YOU BRING LOTS OF HOT GIRLS! - who are all way too hot for me :( :'( Thanks for reading! jammin! p.s. if you would liek to hear more of my opinion please say so :P:P:P... I love to voice it. HAHAHAHA! - Sat, 13 Mar 2004 9:57pm
brad User Info... | um..if i may. i wasn't at this show last night. but i have listened to every song on Crowned Kings website from start to finish, and not one of them was even remotely "ska" flavoured that i can recall, apart from having a horn section. perhaps they have older ska songs that they play live..but the stuff they have out now..is radio style rock (ala' blink etc) but with horns..(some of which is catchy as all hell i might add), however not really my thing. reminded my of the last Less Than Jake album that i didnt bother listening to more than once. whatever...to each his own. - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 3:03am
alain User Info... | First was black tie social. They impressed me for a first show, I think I especially liked their first song, and their being the habitat. Second was One Handed Prayer. It's safe to say they're one of my favorite bands... EVER. They rocked my socks, and Ian is pretty sexy aside batman. Third was solemn fist. I didn't much care for their music, it seemed the guitarist that looked like a monkey was the focus and let everyone else lack in playing. Fourth was Lythic. Awesome, mind numbing/blowing. Also one of my favorite bands... EVER. So for $6, two of my favorite bands...EVER playing was a pretty sweet deal. Fifth was crowned king. Meh, not my thing either. Got the crowd going, but not me I guess. All in all, great show - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 4:39am
eboner User Info... | worst show ever. (i wasnt actually there..but i missed aidans band which is lame of me) sorry princess. - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 6:43am
Ian User Info... | I have to give a lot of credit to my two favorite bands of the night. Of course, Lythic Blue rocked the show. They always do. I was blown away once again. GREAT set you guys. The other band was Black Tie Social. Wow. You guys really set the stage. I thought you played some very creative, funky tunes, and were very together. I disagree with needing to move around lots on stage all the time. Moshing on stage doesn't equal audience connection. You guys were relaxed on stage, and in your zone, which allowed the audience to really connect with you! I was impressed, and I'll make a point of coming to see your shows in the future. For Solemn Fist, I was very impressed. You guys had fun up there and really gave us a good time. I'm not much into punk, but I do appreciate good musicianship and songwriting. Very cool set. Crowned King I didn't hear much of. I'm not a fan of ska, and didn't stick around. It seemed like the audience got really into some of the music though. I can't really offer much of an opinion but I heard some good things. Overall it seemed like a good show. People had fun and there was a nice variety of music to listen to. I'm really interested in hearing some more reviews, so post 'em up! By the way, if any of the band members found an extra power cable, likely near the door to the right (if you face the stage) of the stage, I'm missing mine. It's the power cord for my bass head. It's somewhat larger than most power cables. Email me at [email protected] if you've found such a thing. Thanks! Jam_Aylott, since when were you the final authority on performances like this? You sound like a snob. Have some respect for those who know more than you. - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 8:22am
Jam_Aylott User Info... | excuuuuuuuuse me! don't presume anything.... I was simply giving my opinion... this is a show review... sorry for not blowing sunshine up everyones ass :P - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 9:20am
Demen Ted User Info... | I agree... besides horns, there aint no ska in CK... Nothing beats the specials. Nothing. Wasnt at the show, but my bassist said it was good, he hated black tie social, and he really liked the third and last band... Crowned King are not ska. not ska at all. [+} User Info... | a big thanks to scott and matt for organizing/sound. shows can't happen without dedicated people to run them. there is still much work to do on our part as black tie social. but it was a decent first show. thanks for those who stayed inside and listened. one handed prayer, these kids have potential. they have gear, a look, and a sound. and maybe i don't really feel that kind of music, but i could hear the talent and work that they put into their songs. i wish i could have heard mr. j's vocals, he had some dynamic range that is close to coming into it's own. solemn fist. i'm sorry that i came halfway through the set. this band brings me back to going to good shows with talented bands. they would have been right at home at the pandora project when the satanic surfers and belvedere played one of the best all ages night in victoria. great drum sound/solid time (one thing that one handed prayer lacked) lythic blue. man! they've come such a long way since martin's blue spikey hair days. i remember their "last show" at burnside. i'm totally glad it wasn't, because any band that lists tori amos as one of their musical references is just fine with me. crowned king. if i was writing destructively catchy pop music, this is what i'd want to sound like. the explosive energy of the lead vocals, the swaggering hooks of the crunchy ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL GIBSON playing guitarist. it was a good night for them. i saw these fine young men about 2 years ago in vancouver, and they've become a more together band since. again. thanks to all the coordinators and everyone who came out to listen and support local music. - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 10:55am
utopian society User Info... | My two cents... Black Tie Social - I was pretty impressed considering it was their first show. It would have been nice if a bit more emphasis had been placed on the sax, it made for a nice touch on the traditional instrument mix. They had a bit of a different sound going for them, which I liked. Although they didn't come off as apprehensive, they didn't look 100% at home on stage, but that will almost certainly be fixed with time and experience. A little more movement on stage would definitely make for an improvement, but overall I thought it was a good performance from a promising young band. One Handed Prayer - They looked like they were really giving it their all during this performance, especially the lead singer - he seemed really into it, which gave them a feeling of genuine showmanship. Perhaps not totally my style musically, but they definitely earned my respect with their commanding stage presence. Solemn Fist - These guys may be young but they are obviously accomplished musicians and, perhaps more importantly, they looked like they were enjoying themselves during their set. It was good to see some catchy punk rock on the bill, and these guys certainly didn't disappoint. Lythic Blue - As usual, I was pretty blown away by Lythic. Outrageous stage maneouvers, unlimited energy, and a polished sound combined to make for a near-amazing performance. But then again, that seems to be the trend for this band - each time I see them they get better and better. They possess an unabashed enthusiasm which has the ability to draw the audience right into their performance, creating a completely engaging atmosphere. My only complaint is that they didn't play Ocean Spirit, but aside from that it was yet another step in the right direction towards live musical perfection. Crowned King - It made me a little sad to see how the horn section has gradually faded into background noise for this band. Granted, they never really had a huge focus on their ska-ish side in the first place, but they did have a cool sound on Tempting Fate and unfortunately it seems that they're morphing into a more - dare I say it - radio friendly band by slowly phasing out the horns. That said, they did put on a relatively blistering show, with excellent charisma and energy. They charmed most of the audience right from the beginning, and before long they had nearly complete control over the crowd. Shaun was all over that stage, seemingly unable to stand still for more than three seconds - much to the band's credit. I'm a little disappointed they didn't play more of their older songs, but with a brand new record out and all that was to be expected. It wasn't quite as good as their performance at Warped '02, but nonetheless it was definitely above average even though their sound could have used a bit of variation. Note - That Satanic Surfers/Belvedere/DGB/Moneyshot show was probably my favourite local show as well. Four bands of that calibre all having excellent sets made for one fantastic time! - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 5:29pm
Blackjack User Info... | This show was totally worth saving up my meager pennies for the last two weeks! Spring break started beautifully, and the theme was ROCK!!! Black Tie Social: Wicked set! For a first, it was definitely impressive. I personally thought the band was lacking stage presence, but then Aidan would put his foot on the monitor and all would be right with the world. wOOt One Handed Prayer: I am so biassed, but these guys rule! I could listen to that bass solo/improv for hours...well maybe till someone took out the aluminum foil...shinyyyy. Definitely the best I've ever seen these guys play. wOOt Solemn Fist: Yah, I liked these guys. I'm not a big fan of the new age punk, but these guys delivered a good sound. I particularily enjoyed the guitarist playing the SG which I aptly dubbed, the Hunchback. Sweet stuff from Vancoooovur. wOOt Lythic Blue: Ahhhh, they only get better. I never get tired of listening to the opening of The Distance Between the Moon and a Star... I also greatly enjoyed the robotronic stage presence, oh and Elliot grabbed his crotch...bahahahaha! doublewOOt Crowned King: They may not be ska, but I know what I like, and I didn't like these guys. Maybe I just wasn't feeling in the mood for watching the lead singer flail, or the executioner's line up of horns between the drummer and the singer, or maybe I just have bad taste. Either way, I am never going to bluenotes again. WomP Well I hope that I see a few more shows like this before my teeth fall out and 3/4 of my body hair is in my pants. Luvly - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 5:30pm
[+} User Info... | i'm glad someone else was at that show enjoying themselves. the satanic sufer show really summed up all that was good about pandora. definitely one of the best all ages lineups in victoria. - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 7:17pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | Hahaha i'm glad everyone seemed to enjoy the show, we kicked off spring brek with a bang .. and remember to come close spring break with a bang with WARSAW PACK!! They're one of the best live acts in Canada (my opinion) and this is one of the only all ages shows they're doing on their tour. Its also cool to know people appricated that Satanic Surfers show *laugh* that show bosts being the worst financial loss EVER for Bosevus Productions!! So its good to know people enjoyed it while it was there *laugh* Thanx to Black Tie Social, One Handed Prayer, Solomn Fist, Lythic Blue, and Crowned King for kickin out the jams and all being so chill and good to work with. *cheers* I'll see ya'll at Warsaw Pack! - Sun, 14 Mar 2004 9:00pm
utopian society User Info... | Definitely, I've already got my ticket. :) Thanks again for that cd Scott, it was much appreciated! -Joni - Mon, 15 Mar 2004 4:49am
anemity User Info... | Ska music is very much a "pop" genre.... someone said that earlier and i would have to disagree. Do you know how many 'ska' bands make it into mainstream music? Turn on your radio bud. - Mon, 15 Mar 2004 9:03am
ian too late User Info... | horns do not make a ska band, they are simply a pop rock punk band with horns... - Mon, 15 Mar 2004 11:05am
Jarsht User Info... | Because I do not have a website, I eat up livevictoria space with my blabber. Black tie put out a good performance. I am always mystified by Aidans good looks, I remember times where me and all my show going friends (especially sanae) would gather round aidan and adore his natural beauty. Lythic Blue as always was entertaining, they were my favorate band of the night. I believe that your whole songs are solos, all over the place and as enlightening as giving someone a whip cream facial (I mean this in a positive way, although I dont see how it could be taken as any other). Crowned King was better than I expected. The guys in the band seemed stoked to play, and put on a good performance. - Mon, 15 Mar 2004 7:31pm
jam_aylott User Info... | amnetiy (I know I Spelt that wrong) I take back what I said about the ska/pop thing... its just that many ska bands that I would acctaully hear of (over the radio ect) would be quite pop... however, lots of the unmainstream stuff is quite good! - Tue, 16 Mar 2004 9:59am
Skinny User Info... | Well, this is one of the first shows I've been to in a good long while, but it was worth it. Black Tie Social - I missed them. And from what I hear, I'm damn sorry I did. One Handed Prayer - Yet another biased opinion here, kiddies, but nonetheless, these guys kick ass. I will admit though, I've seen these guys play a lot better. I think Dave went a little nuts with the effects. Other than that, Ian's a sexy mofo. Solemn Fist - Catchy music, guitarist's a crack addict, though. I didn't think the music was anything that spectacular. It was good, but I wasn't impressed or anything. Lythic Blue - I don't even need to review these guys, cuz everyone knows what has to be said about them: they rule. I'm kicking myself for missing their shows for the past year or so. Very VERY good stuff. Crowned King - This is a weird one. Having heard their song on the radio, I wasn't too stoked about them, because I didn't really care for that song. When they started playing though, I couldn't help but get up and get moving around. To me, they just seemed to have a really REALLY fun set. I had a blast. And they're stuff's a LOT better than the crap they play on the radio. ALl in all, very good show, worth every penny. - Tue, 16 Mar 2004 3:39pm

Dave User Info... | This post is definately a little late, but here it is. Short and sweet. Black Tie Social: Awesome One Handed Prayer: Damned Good Solemn Fist: Pretty Awesome. Definately more than expected. Lythic Blue: Can i stop grovelling now? ok, AWESOME! Crowned King: Meh....Lot's of talent, lot's of potential, but they didn't seem genuine to me. Oh well. - Sun, 21 Mar 2004 5:22pm
