I like mine, its very bright and works wicked for metal, sucks for clean tones - Sun, 12 Sep 2004 6:03pm

I agree with Danny. Not the greatest for clean sounds but very warm and tube-e. You can get nice cleans depending on your axe's pickups and overall quality but make no mistake, this amp was made with the lead channels in mind. I've had mine since '92 and never had a problem. In fact I've yet to change any of the tubes (although I'm sure they're due). One time I spilled a glass of water into the head during a show and blew the fuse, but that was fixed the next day with a new fuse. Never put liquids of any sort on your tube heads people! As for distorted tones, the 5150 is awesome. If you need it to rip your head off, it will. Remember, this is the amp designed by Eddie Van Halen to replace his aging Marshall. In essence it is a hot-rodded Marshall built by Peavey. One of the features I really like is the resonance control (exclusive to Peavey, I think) which acts like a presence control for the bottom end. Tightens and fattens. If you happen to have the head and 4x12 cab, this amp moves a lot of air. It is one of the reasons I bought it. Also, it has a high durability factor. I've been shit kicking my 5150 for years in backs of trucks, cars, and onstage and although it is starting to show its age, it has never needed servicing. A feature that the newer 5150 '2' models have is reverb which you might like and the pedal it comes with has an effects loop bypass that I've found handy (I run my delay through the effects loop). Many companies sell high gain tube heads now but the 5150 is the one that started it all in the early 90's. If you're into metal it may not be crunchy enough for you (it is for me). There are definately crunchier heads to be had but they are very expensive as a rule (check out Mesa Boogie prices) and you might be able to find a good used 5150 for a reasonable price. I will never sell mine. Lastly, Peavey makes a 5150 combo which is a 60 watt 2x12. I'd recommend checking it out because it is damn loud and not nearly as heavy and awkward as the head and cab. - Mon, 13 Sep 2004 6:57pm
