i am we : revolutionary suicide

I am we
by huey p newton

There is an old African saying, "I am we." If you met an African in ancient times and asked him who he was, he would reply, "I am we. This is revolutionary suicide: I, we, all of us are the one and the multitude.

So many of my comrades are gone now. Some tight partners, crime partners, and brothers off the block are begging on the street. Others are in asylum, penitentiary, or grave. They are all suicides of one kind of another who had the sensitivity and tragic imagination to see the oppression. Some overcame; they are the revolutionary suicides. Others were reactionary suicides who either overestimated or underestimated the enemy, but in any case were powerless to change their conception of the oppressor.

The differences lies in hope and desire. By hoping and desiring, the revolutionary suicide chooses life; he is, in the words of Nietzsche, "an arrow of longing for another shore." Both suicides despise tyranny, but the revolutionary is both a great despiser and a great adorer who longs for another shore.

The reactionary suicide must learn, as his brother the revolutionary has learned, that the desert is not a circle. It is a spiral. When we have passed through the desert, nothing will be the same.

You cannot bare your throat to the murderer. As George Jackson said, you must defend yourself and take the dragon position as in karate and make the front kick and the back kick when you are surrounded. You do not beg because your enemy comes with the butcher knife and the hatchet in the other. "He will not become a Buddhist over night."

The Preacher said that the wise man and the fool have the same end: they go to the grave as a dog. Who sends us to the grave? The unknowable, the force that dictates to all classes, all territories, all ideologies; he is death, the Big Boss. An ambitious man seeks to dethrone the Big Boss, to free himself, to control when and how he will go to the grave.

There is another illuminating story of the wise man and the fool, found in Mao's Little Red Book. A foolish old man went to the North Mountain and began to dig; a wise old man passed by and said, "Why do you dig; foolish old man? Do you not know that you cannot move the mountain with a little shovel?" But the foolish old man answered resolutely, "While the mountain cannot get any higher, it will get lower with each shovelful. When I pass on, my sons and his sons and his son's sons will go on making the mountain lower. Why can't we move the mountain?"

And the foolish old man kept digging, and the generations that followed after him, and the wise old man looked on in disgust. But the resoluteness and the spirit of the generations that followed the foolish old man touched God's heart, and God sent two angels who put the mountain on their backs and moved the mountain.

This is the story Mao told. When he spoke of God he meant the six hundred million who had helped him to move imperialism and bourgeois thinking, the two great mountains.

The reactionary suicide is "wise," and the revolutionary suicide is a "fool," a fool for the revolution in the way Paul meant when he spoke of being "a fool for Christ." That foolishness can move the mountains of oppression; it is our great leap and our commitment to the dead and the unborn.

We will touch God's heart; we will touch the people's heart, and together we will move the mountain.

the establishment’s political agenda

By conjuring up the image of a Canada under siege from al-Qaeda and “homegrown” Islamicist terrorists, the Conservative government, the national security establishment, the corporate media, and a pliant official opposition are seeking to overcome popular resistance to Canada’s participation in wars, closer collaboration with the Bush administration, further economic and geo-political integration with the United States, and increased repressive powers for the state.

This fascinating German documentary explores the bizarre life story of Ted Kaczynski, using it as a prism for the often unexamined history of the Internet. Director Lutz Dammbeck takes an unorthodox approach to the material, speculating about the darker side of technological innovation, and touching on subjects as diverse as terrorism, the CIA, acid, Ken Kesey, and utopianism.

More of a film essay - of the type pioneered by Orson Welles and Chris Marker - than a standard documentary, German filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck’s The Net: The Unabomber, the LSD and the Internet begins with the typical format and structure of a nonfiction film, and a single subject (the life and times of mail bomber Ted Kaczynski). From that thematic springboard, Dammbeck branches out omnidirectionally, segueing into a series of thematic riffs and variants on such marginally-related subjects as: the history of cyberspace, terrorism, utopian ideals, LSD, the Central Intelligence Agency, and Cuckoo’s Nest author Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL APPROVES TEXT OF INDIGENOUS RIGHTS DECLARATION
In a historic vote which brought a standing ovation from those present, the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva has this week approved the text of a declaration on indigenous peoples' rights that was first discussed over twenty years ago.

The draft declaration will now move to the UN General Assembly, where member countries are expected to vote on it later this year.

If approved, the declaration would set a benchmark against which countries' treatment of tribal peoples can be judged; it is not legally binding.

The Native Blog: Fire Thunder Impeached After Abortion Controversy - I went over to check out The Native Blog and found out that Lakota Tribal President Cecelia Fire THunder was impeached for her position on Women's rights in South Dakota and her intention to open a Women's health clinic on the reservation. Evidently the far-right has found a new home in Indian Country.

This a crying shame. This woman has put up with so much in defense of Lakota rights that this last slap in the face, (and it is a slap) has sealed the destiny of all Native people in the United States forever. When prejudice against women in our societies gets to the point where American Indian Movement leader can run against Fire Thunder for the Lakota presidency claiming he should be elected over her because he is a man, makes this sort of neo-conservative coup possible.

To Be Muslim in Boston

''Where you find the temples of the Nation of Islam or the mosques of Islam, you find them in the worst neighborhoods where black people live,'' ...''Places where even police would be afraid to go, you'll find the Nation of Islam, because that's our mission, to go into the depths of the funk and filth of where our people are and try to bring them back onto the road of life, and hopefully they become productive citizens. Islam, and to be a Muslim in America, is not a burden to me. It frees me, because I don't have to carry other people's luggage. If a person has a problem with a person being not only black but also a Muslim and a member of the Nation of Islam, that's their luggage, and it's too expensive for me to buy.''

Latin Kings: Black & Gold

http://www.bignoisefilms.org/video/BnG_trailer.mov

The story of the Latin Kings and Queens is a story of empowerment and self-transcendence. The Nation rolled 3,000 deep in New York City. Most of its members are kids in their teens and early twenties who come from the Bronx and Washington Heights, from the poor Latino sections of Queens and Brooklyn. They go through school systems that expect them to fail, are raised in a culture that represents them as violent criminals or welfare cheats and live in neighborhoods where there are no jobs and they are forced into an underground economy to survive. ...The Kings and Queens are a compelling example of people empowering themselves by organizing collectively. They built a community across the lines of identification that work to divide and disempower us. They were not broken by massive opposition from the media and the government.

Frantz Fanon - Wretched of the Earth

Colonial domination, because it is total and tends to over-simplify, very soon manages to disrupt in spectacular fashion the cultural life of a conquered people. This cultural obliteration is made possible by the negation of national reality, by new legal relations introduced by the occupying power, by the banishment of the natives and their customs to outlying districts by colonial society, by expropriation, and by the systematic enslaving of men and women.

Stop Israeli War Crimes! - Emergency Rally This Saturday, July 22 at 3:00 PM

Description:

EMERGENCY RALLY

Stop Israeli War Crimes! End the Siege on Lebanon and Gaza! Free All Palestinian and Lebanese Political Prisoners!

SATURDAY JULY 22ND AT 3 PM VANCOUVER ART GALLERY

Palestinian and Lebanese community groups in Vancouver will be demonstrating to demand an end to Israeli terrorism in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, and will be calling for an immediate end to Israel's unjustified aggression and for Canada to end its support for the Israeli apartheid regime.

In the first 24 hours of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, 27 civilians were killed, including 15 children. In the past 96 hours, the Israeli assault has killed over 100 civilians in Lebanon, many of whom were children, and over 300 reported injuries. Homes, bridges, and the Beirut international airport have been bombed by the Israeli Air Force, along with the targeting of vital infrastructure that supports their daily lives (roads, institutions, bridges, and airports). Dan Halutz, the Israeli army chief of staff, has stated that, "nothing is safe in Lebanon" and has
threatened to "turn Lebanon's clock back 20 years". This type of blind aggression, which constitutes war crimes, is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

The attack on Lebanon has come 19 days into a brutal assault on the Palestinians of Gaza in which Israel has killed 74 people- a disproportionate number of whom are children- and bombing water and electricity stations, bridges, roads and other vital infrastructure, creating a humanitarian disaster for hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people. Canada has given its support to this Israeli terrorism by voting against a resolution to condemn the attacks at the UN Human Rights Council, and by its ongoing diplomatic and economic ties with Israel. Stephen Harper and the Canadian government have also participated in starvation policies against the Palestinians by cutting off all their foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority. This fact, combined with the recent invasion, has pushed the population of the Gaza Strip into a severe humanitarian crisis.

Join us to show your support for the Palestinian people of Gaza and the people of Lebanon! Express your outrage against the Israeli military invasion of Gaza and Lebanon! Call on the Canadian government to act!

Over 100 Palestinians Killed in Three Week Israeli Offensive

"Well, I think the demand for the return of the soldiers has been a pretext, and, in fact, nobody is talking about that demand any more here in Israel. We all forgot about it. This has long time been forgotten. If you want to return captive soldiers, you don't go and bomb the other side in a way that may harm your chances. So, I don't think this is the issue at all, and I don't think these Israeli demands are going to be accepted unilaterally.

I think the Israelis are facing, both in the case of the Hamas and the case of the Hezbollah, two very weak military powers, but determined enough to show the Israelis that there are two options here. One is the option of a very troubled, but nonetheless constructive, dialogue, or the option of destruction and violence.

And I think that these Israeli demands are not made in good faith, and I don't think that they are really the objective of the Israeli operation either in Lebanon or in Palestine. I think the real target of these operations, which were by the way preplanned and they were not just in a reaction to the abduction of the soldiers, was to try and eliminate the only two resistance movements left in the Middle East that oppose the Israeli decision to unilaterally impose its vision on Palestine, a vision that includes the creation of a greater Israel over most of the West Bank and the enclaving and imprisoning of the Palestinians in two small Bantustans.

And now, the Arab regimes are unable to oppose it. America endorses it. The Europeans seem to be indifferent. And there are only two movements, which are not just guerrilla movements, but also popular social and cultural movements, that oppose these policies. And the Israelis think they have the window of opportunity with the unconditional American support to use force in order to impose their will. And I think that’s the real agenda.

And had the soldiers not been abducted, the Israelis would have chosen another incident, a different incident, to unleash their forces in what they think is a moment of historical opportunity. But I think we all are going to learn that they were wrong, and the price we are all going to pay is going to be very high for this adventurous and reckless policy." illan pappe

The brutal story of British empire continues to this day

The brutal story of British empire continues to this day

All around the world, from Sierra Leone to Sri Lanka, the violent legacy of colonialism can still be witnessed

Richard Gott
Saturday July 22, 2006
The Guardian

Many of the present conflicts in the world take place in the former colonial territories that Britain abandoned, exhausted and impoverished, in the years after the second world war. This disastrous imperial legacy is still highly visible, and it is one of the reasons why the British empire continues to provoke such harsh debate. If Britain made such a success of its colonies, why are so many in an unholy mess half a century later, major sources of violence and unrest?

Top of the list is Palestine, a settler colony that Britain abandoned in 1947 after barely 30 years, having imposed a population of mostly European settlers on the indigenous people - one of the typical characteristics of imperial rule. Unfortunately for the settlers, arriving during the imperial sunset, they had insufficient time to achieve the scale of defeat of the local people, amounting to extermination and genocide, that characterised the British conquest and settlement of Australia.

Israel, Racism, and the Canadian Media

Israel, Racism, and the Canadian Media

by Dan Freeman-Maloy; July 21, 2006 - Znet

In the Canadian media, Israel is provoked, and then responds. For the military attacks on the Gaza Strip in late June and early July, we are told that the provocation was the June 25 operation by Palestinian resistance fighters against a military outpost near Gaza, and specifically the capture of an Israeli tank gunner.

The Palestinian operation, according to most Canadian media, was unprovoked – it could not have been provoked by the Israeli attacks leading up to the operation, though in June alone these had already killed 49 Palestinians. Nor could it have been provoked by the imprisonment of 359 Palestinian children, 105 Palestinian female adults and another 9000+ Arab males (mostly Palestinians) in Israeli jails, or by the mass starvation of Gaza. As a June 30 editorial in the Globe and Mail put it, “the onus for resolving the confrontation lies with Hamas,” and while Palestinians must quietly endure tank shelling, air strikes and starvation, “Israel is within its right to respond to terrorism and violence.”

Israel Plans Torture Center for Abducted Lebanese

In short, Israel plans to invade southern Lebanon again, kidnap Lebanese, and feed them into an illegal detention and torture system based on the notorious Khiam prison and torture camps where Palestinians are imprisoned for resisting the occupation.

In Israel, with racist and sociopathic Zionists at the helm, it will be business as usual in regard to the Lebanese people, who are considered little more than untermenschen.

Painting Hezbollah with Osama’s Black Op Brush

http://kurtnimmo.com/?p=474

“The Jew-hating terrorists of Hezbollah who call themselves the ‘party of God’ are already here. In America. Plotting attacks. Raising money. Slipping through the cracks.” According to Malkin, not only are Iranian miscreants “casing and photographing New York City subways and other potential targets” and ready to activate “sleeper cells” of stepfordized Arab Hezbollahites, they are also exploiting “gullible American women” in order “to ease their way into the country.”

In the days and weeks ahead, as Hezbollah successfully holds off the Israeli juggernaut, armed to the teeth with the best death merchandise Lockheed Martin and Raytheon can provide, the resistance movement will be hyper-demonized, shellacked as one of Osama’s minions from Abaddon (a Hebrew word akin to sheol, the realm of the dead, entirely appropriate, considering the context and the ceaseless and transparent Zionist propaganda we must endure).

*Pro-Israeli Media Bias Is Real And Deliberate*

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2006/07/25/18291413.php

"No one in their right mind would ever deny there is a bias in the US
media favoring Israel. The media makes it seem Israel’s interests and
the interests of the West are identical when in fact, other than the
racist violence directed towards people of color, they are not always
the same. Meanwhile this same media demonizes and vilifies Arabs and
Muslims the same way the US media dehumanized and denigrated Native
Americans and Africans in years past. As far as the US media is
concerned, Israel can do no wrong, no matter what they do, no matter how
repugnant and ruthless their policies and actions are.

"If you want to really know what’s going on in the world, turn off the
mainstream media, put down the New York Times, the Washington Post or
their clones and search the news stands and the Internet for reliable
sources of information. You can also listen to short wave radio,
Internet radio or glean your news from media not as biased or distorted
as the lap dogs for the NeoCon war/ethnic cleansing agenda. Make no
mistake the bias is real and deliberate. The good news is we don’t have
to go for the okey-doke." -- Junious Ricardo Stanton

DN: Lebanese Author Says New Poll Shows Overwhelming Support For Hezbollah

"...You know, this conflict has been raging for two weeks now. And it's very interesting to compare government officials’ statements in the first week to their comments now. Of course, this has a lot to do with Hezbollah’s successes on the ground, you know, by Israeli standard, as well. I mean, the Israeli Army is faring very poorly. They're considered the fourth strongest army in the world, and they're fighting, you know, what they call a ragtag group of militiamen. And yet this very small group of fighters has been able to deter Israel, in fact, and has been inflicting heavy casualties on them. And so I think this -- really this conflict has all the making of -- the potential, sorry, to change the entire face of the region if it continues. And whether or not Hezbollah is weakened, I think, is immaterial here. Already, I think, Israel has failed to reach any of its objectives....So this is the first time, I think, that the Israeli public gets to see -- the conflict has been transferred from the Lebanese arena to Israel itself. And this is something quite unprecedented. And this is, in fact, where Hezbollah’s deterrent capability lies, not only on the ground, but also in terms of how it can retaliate." -- amal saad ghorayeb

Tribes working to prevent suicide

Tribes working to prevent suicide

By James C. Falcon, Journal Staff Writer

RAPID CITY — According to a study produced by the South Dakota Department of Health, 1,068 people committed suicide in the state from 1993 to 2002. Of these cases, 162 — or 15 percent — were American Indians.

Fain LeBeau was almost one of them.

In March 2000, he had attempted suicide in the basement of his home in Eagle Butte.

However, his father, Corbin LeBeau, saw what had happened and quickly got his son to a nearby hospital, preventing Fain LeBeau’s death.

Both father and son attended at a suicide prevention conference Wednesday in Rapid City. The conference, titled “It Takes A Tribe … ,” was created for Indian entities and organizations to meet and discuss ways to prevent suicide in Indian Country.

The title of the conference refers to the fact that, with the help of the tribal community, suicide prevention can become more widespread, helping to lower statistics — an opinion made prevalent throughout the conference.

“Suicide can affect anybody,” Corbin LeBeau, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council, said. According to LeBeau, suicide knows no economic boundaries. “It changes the dynamics of a family. To end your life is permanent.”

The LeBeaus were among many people who shared stories of either the suicide of a loved one or their own survivals from a suicide attempt. Mourning the loss of family members, “personal shame” and the divorce of parents were contributing factors mentioned during the forum.

The causes of suicide can vary.

Biological, personal/psychological, and environmental risk factors can lead someone to commit suicide, participants learned. A “final straw” factor could include such examples as a crisis in a relationship, the loss of freedom or a major loss.

Of the 12 Indian Health Service agencies, the Aberdeen Area agency had the third-highest suicide rate for American Indians. The agency area includes South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

On a national scale, 322 of about 31,000 deaths by suicide throughout the United States were committed by Indians, said Louisa Holmes, a prevention specialist for the Suicide Prevention Resource Center.

Holmes also noted on Wednesday that a high majority of the successful suicide rates occur in the western United States.

Statistics also show that within the Aberdeen area, Indian men between the ages of 15 and 19 are most likely to commit suicide.

Many tribal leaders from throughout South Dakota and North Dakota were at the conference, including Michael Jandreau, chairman of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe; Ken W. Davis, chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians; and Spike Bighorn, former chairman for Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Reservation.

Quinn, the eldest son of Bighorn and his wife, Roxann, committed suicide a year ago.

Unified Community Solutions will be hosts of a workshop, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, at the Howard Johnson Express, 950 North St., Rapid City, on Oct. 18 and 19.

"conscience" clause that would allow pharmacists to refuse service
based on "moral" objections. The Board received thousands of
emails and letters of which the overwhelming majority opposed the
clause. As a result, the Board is going back to the drafting stage.

Continued pressure on the Board will help bring about strong rules that
prevent pharmacists from acting as moral judges over the public. Please
continue to let them know where you stand. At the last Board meeting, it
was announced that public testimony would be taken at the August 31
meeting. Radical Women plans on attending and speaking. Come with us
to help get the message out! If you are interested in attending the Board
meeting, please contact me at 206-722-6057 or
[email protected].

The article below gives more information about this crucial national fight.

Across the U.S., the battle over reproductive justice has played out in
many arenas: attacks on clinics, attempts to ban abortion-inducing
RU-486, pressure on medical schools not to teach surgical abortions, and
more. Flying under the radar has been an effort to win “conscience
clauses” that allow druggists to refuse to fill prescriptions because of
“moral” objections.

'Everything In My Life Is Destroyed, So I Will Fight Them'

"Hezbollah gives you dignity, it returns your dignity to you," he replied, "Israel has put all of the Arab so-called leaders under her foot, but Nasrallah says 'No more.'"

'Everything In My Life Is Destroyed, So I Will Fight Them'

By Dahr Jamail

07/28/06 "Information Clearing House" - -- "I am in Hezbollah because I care," the fighter, who agreed to the interview on condition of anonymity, told me. "I care about my people, my country, and defending them from the Zionist aggression." I jotted furiously in my note pad while sitting in the back seat of his car. We were parked not far from Dahaya, the district in southern Beirut which is being bombed by Israeli warplanes as we talk.

The sounds of bombs echoed off the buildings of the capital city of Lebanon yesterday afternoon. Out the window, I watched several people run into the entrance of a business center, as if that would provide them any safety.

The member of Hezbollah I was interviewing-let's call him Ahmed-has been shot three times during previous battles against Israeli forces on the southern Lebanese border. His brother was killed in one of these battles. It's been several years since his father was killed by an air strike in a refugee camp.

"My home now in Dahaya is pulverized, so Hezbollah gave me a place to stay while this war is happening," he said, "When this war ends, where am I to go? What am I to do? Everything in my life is destroyed now, so I will fight them."

Remembering 1981: seventh and eight men die on the fast

Kevin Lynch laid to rest in Dungiven
The death on hunger strike of INLA Volunteer Kevin Lynch after seventy one days occurred on 1 August 1981, followed next day by the death of IRA Volunteer Kieran Doherty. They were the seventh and eight men respectively to die on the fast.

Kevin had been lapsing into frequent periods of unconsciousness in the last four days, having already lost his sight, hearing and speech. His family were at his bedside throughout the last days until the early hours of Saturday morning when he died.

For the Israeli air force, carrying out bombing raids over Lebanon is about as challenging as shooting fish in a barrel.

Hezbollah has no air force or air defences. So the Israeli air force — one of the best in the world — has been able to drop a constant barrage of bombs for the past two weeks on Lebanon, where civilians are essentially defenceless.

More than 600 Lebanese have been killed, according to the Lebanese Health Minister — more than 10 times the Israeli death toll.

By now, the Israeli civilian population has been largely evacuated from northern Israel, where Hezbollah rockets can strike, to the safe central and southern parts of the country. For millions in Lebanon, including an estimated 25,000 Canadians still there, no such safe haven exists.

Yesha Rabbinical Council: During time of war, enemy has no innocents

July 30, 2006

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3283720,00.html

The Yesha Rabbinical Council announced in response to an IDF attack in Kfar Qanna that "according to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy."

All of the discussions on Christian morality are weakening the spirit of the army and the nation and are costing us in the blood of our soldiers and civilians," the statement said. (Efrat Weiss) - Mon, 31 Jul 4:27pm Edited: Mon, 31 Jul 4:32pm

Kevin Lynch: Fallen Comrade of the IRSM

“If they took everything else away, they’d never take my principles. I’ll die before they take them from me.” -- Kevin Lynch-- "Ray Collins Kevin Lynch: A Personal Memory - Ray Collins"

http://www.raycollinsmusic.com/news.html

He took part in the first hunger strike of 1980, saying "if they took
everything else away, they'd never take my principles. I'll die before
they take them from me."

The first hunger strike was called off before anyone died, but after
the British government reneged on its promises, a second hunger strike
was called in 1981. Ten men, including Lynch and two other INLA
volunteers, died on the second strike.

The Case for Boycotting Israel: Boycott Now!

http://www.counterpunch.org/

Counterpunch Weekend Edition
August 5 / 6, 2006

By VIRGINIA TILLEY

Johannesburg, South Africa.

It is finally time. After years of internal arguments, confusion, and dithering, the time has come for a full-fledged international boycott of Israel. Good cause for a boycott has, of course, been in place for decades, as a raft of initiatives already attests. But Israel's war crimes are now so shocking, its extremism so clear, the suffering so great, the UN so helpless, and the international community's need to contain Israel's behavior so urgent and compelling, that the time for global action has matured. A coordinated movement of divestment, sanctions, and boycotts against Israel must convene to contain not only Israel's aggressive acts and crimes against humanitarian law but also, as in South Africa, its founding racist logics that inspired and still drive the entire Palestinian problem.
