Livevic Scott User Info... | August 25th The Fairfield Community Association (FCA) is having a meeting between residents, staff, FCA Board Members etc. This meeting will be held @ The Garry Oak Room at 7:30pm tommorow (the 25th) They're looking for anyone who lives in the Fairfield area and supports these shows to come down and show support for what they're doing. This comes after the July 22nd show where a neighbor or two came to the center during a show and was in an outrage over the noise level etc. I would also like to note that the FCA is in support of these shows, they think its a great way to involve older youth who would not normally come to drop ins as well as a good source of revenue to keep their building and programs running. So if anyone here lives in the Fairfield area and are thus part of the Fairfield community please come down tommorow and show your support for the youth of the area. * This information was paraphrased from a letter I recived about this meeting. - Tue, 24 Aug 2004 12:29pm
Brian VIHC User Info... | Wow, it would have been nice if they had bothered to phone me about this since it was at my show the neighbours spazzed out. If anyone was wondering why I wasn't there it's because I wasn't contacted. Lame. - Wed, 25 Aug 2004 11:40pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | I thought they said they did contact you? I got a phone call about it like 2 weeks ago. Some of the neighbors are mighty annoyed with some of the goings on arround the center there. Not all their concerns have to do with the shows but mostly its just noise levels at the events, as well as dispersal of kids after the shows. SO If you're PROMOTING a show at the Garry Oak Room (or any community center for that matter) try and keep the volume comming off the stage to a resonable level, make sure all doors and windows to the venue are closed at all times. If you are ATTENDING shows at said venues please try and not litter arround the venue, when talking and hanging out outside try and be considerate of people living next door to the venue and the fact that they might be trying to sleep (or whatever else), and after the show party somewhere else. Aside from the noise of the bands (which was one of the 2 major issues) at the shows, people hanging out after the shows until the wee hours of the morning was one of the main issues. I don't know if it is kids from the shows that are sticking arround drinking at the venues after cleanup etc or if it is other random people that hang out there BUT if it is kids from the shows please for your own sake just go somewhere else away from the venue. The final consesus was not that all the neighbors wanted these to end immidately, after hearing the centrs and my concerns (which I think were about the same as Brian's concerns) they were a little less adimant about the canceling of all these shows however they are a little annoyed with not getting any sleep (and honestly I can't really blame them) SO PLEASE, FOR THE SAKE OF OUR FEW ALL AGES VENUES! Respect the venues and the people that live arround them. Don't drink at shows, and don't hang arround drinking at the venues after the shows! Do whatever you want wherever else, thats your own decision and the perks or concequences are yours alone to reap. But the all ages scene in our city balances on a knife edge at all times so, if ya can, act like a saint arround the venues so we can keep having these shows and maybe ... just maybe one day we can lobby for a startup grant to get a proper facility to hold all ages shows. - Thu, 26 Aug 2004 8:10am
Livevic Scott User Info... | Sorry about that whole rant, I don't mean to sound like some Nazi but its a whole different mindset that some of these people are operating on. And I just don't want to see us back to the day where we only had 1 all ages venue and we were hard pressed to get 40 kids out to shows, i'm sure some of you remember thoes days. - Thu, 26 Aug 2004 8:27am
lonemonk User Info... | Amen. (Please people, let that be applied to ALL venues) - Sun, 29 Aug 2004 1:26am
Brian VIHC User Info... | I'm not sure what is meant by "the wee hours of the morning", since at the shows I've put on and been to there the whole area is kid-free by the time I leave, which is usually 11:30-11:45. Occasionally there's a handful waiting for rides, but it sounds like they're blaming random neighbourhood kids on the show when there's no causal relationship. Scott I think the problem (as I'm sure you'll agree) isn't the 75 kids who are there to enjoy the show and understand that messing with the venue and the neighbourhood is stupid and will wreck the all-ages scene. It's the half-dozen kids who show up, don't pay, get super-wasted outside, and act way more drunk than they actually are to get attention. These are the morons the neighbours are complaining about, and when that's all they see, they begin to think the whole place must be full of them. They don't care about the scene or the music, so if there were no punk shows I don't think they'd really notice or care. We can't control these kids and we're in no legal position to physically remove them from the grounds, so it presents something of a dilemma. - Sun, 29 Aug 2004 12:18pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | Yup thats pretty much what the problem is. Brian if you wanna gimme a call sometime I can hash over the whole minnutes of the meeting with you and we can see if we can't come up with something that should work? I as well as the facility attendent (I totally can't remember her name I think its Carrol) were saying that no one was on the grounds when we left at the end of the night save a couple kids waiting for rides. From our point of view these kids are not associated with the show, however from their point of view these drunk loud kids wouldn't be in their back yard if it wern't for this show. So I can see both sides of it. By the end of the night they were off the "these shows need to stop at all costs" tangent and more on the "well I can see why they're good but I wanna sleep at night" I think all we can do right now Is go ad talk to Joan @ Fairfield and ask her what she thinks we should do about these stragler kids, and try and turn the PA down a simdge, keep the doors closed and just not give them anything to bitch about for a while. - Mon, 30 Aug 2004 8:16am
