When Texas emo gods At the Drive-In split in two, with two members forming the Mars Volta and the remaining three putting together Sparta, fans worried the offshoots would never make music approaching that of the original. Yet since their debut Wiretap Scars in 2002, Sparta has proven itself equal to the task of living up to At the Drive-In’s intimidating legacy. And, on its 2004 follow-up Porcelain, the members of Sparta once again delivered the goods with an album of tight post-hardcore recalling the reckless beauty of their former band.
Threes, the El Paso group’s third disc, is due at the end of October, and its release will be accompanied by a tour. With raw punk fury and exuberant melodies, Sparta has what it takes to not only live up to the high expectations of fans, but to exceed them.
An Austin-based six-piece with a truly unique sound, Sound Team released its major label debut Movie Monster earlier this year. The disc’s range of influences is huge—the group began as a duo drawing on inspiration out of everything from traditional American folk and pop to German synthesizer music--and every song is different. However, fans of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon and the Walkmen are flocking to this fascinating, unpredictable and entirely surprising act.
