Event Description

The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund presents
A Well-Tempered Journey: Minsoo Sohn plays J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, Part 2

Across two consecutive evenings, acclaimed pianist Minsoo Sohn will perform all 24 preludes and fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I — a landmark collection that explores every major and minor key and stands as one of the foundational works of the keyboard repertoire.

The journey begins on September 22 with Bach’s 12 Little Preludes, followed by the first 12 preludes and fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I.

Part 2 follows on September 23 with Bach’s 6 Little Preludes before continuing with the final 12 preludes and fugues of the Well-Tempered Clavier.

Whether experienced as a complete two-evening cycle or as individual concerts, these performances offer an opportunity to experience the extraordinary imagination, contrapuntal mastery, and expressive range of Bach’s musical world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Minsoo Sohn is a Korean-American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity — qualities that have earned him acclaim throughout the United States, Canada and Korea. This season, he has appeared at the Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Verbier Festival, Gstaad Menuhin Festival, and La Roque d’Anthéron Festival, as well as with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sohn previously held teaching positions at Michigan State University and the Korean National University of Arts before returning to his alma mater, the New England Conservatory, as a faculty member in the fall of 2023. Sohn is deeply indebted to his mentors, Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, with whom he studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
