Event Description
One of the great pop songbooks of the ‘80s gets handed off to a hard-swinging organ band as saxophonist Cory Weeds marks the release of Hip To Be Square - Plays Huey Lewis & The News, due October 16, 2026 on Cellar Music. The new album brings the music of Huey Lewis & The News back to its roots, stripping away the production’s polish and rebuilding it as greasy soul-jazz.
Weeds, joined by Kansas City organist Chris Hazelton plus guitarist David Rourke and drummer Rudy Petschauer from New York, takes on hits like “Hip to Be Square”, “The Power Of Love”, and “I Want A New Drug”, leaving the melodies intact while remaking them into swinging organ-jazz workouts. The quartet captured their raw energy in the studio following a 2025 U.S. tour. Now, to celebrate the release of Hip To Be Square, they deliver the same spontaneity and fun in spades. You may know the songs, but you’ve never heard them like this.
Saxophonist, record producer, and Cellar Music founder Cory Weeds' warm sound and deep connection to the jazz tradition have made him one of Canada’s most active jazz artists. A prolific bandleader with more than 20 records to his name, Weeds has performed and recorded with Joey DeFrancesco, Jeff Hamilton, Harold Mabern, Brad Turner, and Terell Stafford, to name a few. His recordings have earned international critical acclaim and multiple #1 positions on the JazzWeek charts.
This performance co-sponsored by Peter Cat Records.
