Event Description

5x JUNO nominee / 7x Canadian Folk Music Award winner Andrew Collins and the much anticipated release of his trusty Trio’s new album, “Retro”, at Leopard Frog Farm on Sat July 25, 2:30pm ($30 | [email protected] | 867-222-5270 | 4587 Kauffman Lane, Battersea | www.leopardfrogfarm.com/events ).

Bending and blending genres, these musical shape-shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck, Newgrass invader David Grisman and the legendary Yo Yo Ma! Their show is half & half vocals/instrumentals.

ABOUT THE ANDREW COLLINS TRIO
Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he’s certainly been a major contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including an electrifying fusion of folk, acoustic roots, newgrass and even a dash of chamber where warranted :-)

As Collins gathers up innumerable JUNO nominations (5) and Canadian Folk Music Awards (7) won by his various ensembles, he’s zeroing in on the work he does with Trio-mates: fellow string guru Adam Shier, whose versatility shines through on guitar and mandolin, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals.

Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins and Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck, Newgrass invader David Grisman and the legendary Yo Yo Ma!

The Trio just released, “Retro”, a treasure trove of Andrew’s signature tracks over the years with fresh arrangements and spirited trio interplay. From blazing bluegrass to jazzy waltzes and classical reinterpretations, Retro shows that great music evolves through honouring its roots.

ABOUT RETRO
RETRO is both a homecoming and a fresh spark, marking the sixth release by the Andrew Collins Trio in their 14th year together. Reaching back across 25 years of recordings, Andrew pulls from solo, duo, and collaborative projects, reshaping key pieces with the instincts of a seasoned New Acoustic player who knows exactly when to lean in and when to leave space.

Weaving together bluegrass, classical, jazz and new acoustic threads, each of RETRO’s 11 tracks is a thoughtful re-exploration, from the likes of the lightning-fast Little Widgets, to the deeply emotional Farewell My Old Friend, the tongue-in-cheek groove of Oliver’s Lament, or the toast to musical camaraderie in The Road to Bacchus.

Recorded live off the floor with longtime collaborator and engineering mentor David Travers-Smith, RETRO benefits from a 20-year partnership built on trust and shared ears. David’s more classical approach captures a transparent and raw sound where the mandolin, guitar and bass are front and centre. The concept is simple but potent: keep the melodies clear, then open them up and see where the room, the players, and the moment want to go. RETRO may be drawn from earlier chapters, but the attitude is all present tense—a living, breathing love letter to both the early days and the hard-earned craft that followed.

THE WORD ON THE STREET:

“Light of touch, fast of wit, copiously imaginative, and a musical scholar of the highest distinction, Toronto mandolin virtuoso pulls out all the stops”
Toronto Star

“The level of musicianship is outstanding, as you’d expect from a serial award winner such as Andrew Collins. He must be one of the best mandolin players in the business”
Americana – UK

"One of those bands that pays close attention to the audience, builds rapport quickly, and uses the good vibes to fuel a performance that just gets hotter and hotter as the night unfolds."
Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs NY

“The Andrew Collins Trio are consummate professionals on and off stage. Spellbinding and spectacular in musical performance, it’s matched with a wit and charm not often encountered in today’s music.”
Merlefest, North Carolina

“Collins is a staggering mandolin player, able to achieve extraordinary speed, variety and nuance, whilst also being equally fluent on mandocello, mandola, guitar and violin. The band appears to switch and shape-shift between instruments and roles with absolute assurance and ease… phenomenally talented…”
Folking.com – UK
