Event Description
Voices from the Vanishing showcases Debra Garside's striking photography and bronze sculptures celebrating wildlife that both blend seamlessly into their landscapes and face an uncertain future. Visitors will encounter powerful images and tactile sculptures that capture the duality of vanishing—creatures masterfully camouflaged in their natural
habitats, yet increasingly vulnerable in our changing world. With special focus on wild horses in celebration of the Year of the Horse, each piece invites viewers to witness the beauty of the wild while contemplating our role in its preservation.
Debra's passion for horses began at an early age, and she moved to Alberta in the 1980’s to pursue horses as a
career. Over the next 30 years Debra became one of Canada’s most accredited hunter/jumper coaches, imported sport horses from 17 countries and rode up to the Grand Prix level. As she matured Debra discovered that her original motives for caring for horses were not being served in the horse training industry. In 2008 Debra stepped away from the sport and began studying and photographing wild horses and horse cultures around the world. Applying the work ethic she had learned as a horses trainer, Debra quickly developed her artistic voice in the form of photography and bronze sculpture, soon winning international awards and becoming a sought-after guide for expeditions from the high Arctic to Africa to Antarctica.
Debra continues to advocate for wild horses and is the author of two books: Wind Horses: A Living Heritage of Alberta and Windswept: Sable Island Horses Through the Seasons. She recently moved back to Vancouver Island and
lives in Chemainus, BC.
For physical events that happen at a specific time. For example a concert, or dance performance. If there are multiple shows, you can still duplicate your event to cover them all.
