Pennywise had no idea it would be helping define a whole movement when it released its 1991 self-titled Epitaph debut. But the Hermosa Beach quartet pretty much jumpstarted the whole West Coast punk thing that led to bands like Blink-182, and at a time when the slowed-down heaviness of grunge was all the rage. Eighteen years after forming, Pennywise is still the dictionary definition of turn-of-the-century SoCal punk, with just as much barbed social commentary and musical firepower as ever. 2005’s The Fuse, the band’s eighth album, proved the Warped Tour icons’ staying power with one of its strongest sets yet, and saw Pennywise tackling topics like blatantly biased media (“Fox TV”) and our cell-phone-mad existence (“Disconnect”).
Among the first wave of West Coast punk acts, the Circle Jerks have attained the same legendary status as peers such as Black Flag, The Germs and Fear. Unlike those bands, the Circle Jerks have survived, bringing classic stabs of anti-establishment sentiment like “Deny Everything” and “Murder the Disturbed” to a whole new generation of spiky-haired rebels.
A decade-old, socially conscious SoCal rock band with hardcore roots, Ignite has earned a loyal following all over the world thanks to an Iron Man-like touring schedule. Our Darkest Days, their latest record and first in five years, is a mix of inspiring lyrics, melodic song structures and excellent musicianship.
In a statement heard around the world, at least in punk rock circles, Dave “Brownsound” Braksh announced earlier this year he was leaving Sum 41. The guitarist’s decision to back away from the world-famous band has left him free for other pursuits, including his eagerly anticipated new project Brown Brigade. Said Dave in a recent interview, “The main message of Brown Brigade is peace, love, and positivity.” He added that he expects the group to garner Iron Maiden comparisons.
