"Gorgeously dark" - Folk Radio UK
Mike Tod & Opal Raye sing well-worn traditionals, research their roots, and share them in a fashion that feels ancient yet futuristic at the same time. They play traditional folk song forms, melodies and lyrics, then arrange them with modern elements unconventional to the folk genre like synthesizer instruments, drone harmonics, experimental music influences, walls of dissonant sound, and microtonal clusters. Tod's debut LP (2023) was hailed as, “a masterclass in folk Americana” (Prism Reviews, US) and “gorgeously dark” (Folk Radio, UK), with Tod called “a master at weaving together the past and present” (MusicNGear, EU). In the fall of 2024, Mike and Opal recorded their sophomore album with producer John 'Spud' Murphy (Lankum) at Hellfire Studios in Dublin, Ireland. The album is set for release in late 2025.
