Event Description
Are you interested in learning how to play jazz, but find it overwhelming to consider jumping into a jam? With this workshop, we will be breaking down the tune Autumn Leaves, which is the first jazz standard many jazz musicians learn first. We will be focusing on breaking down the theory behind the chord progression, and the approaches musicians take for improvising on this tune. We will be learning the tune in G minor (first chord Cm) so it's a more approachable key for horn players.
If you have some instrument and theory skills in other genres, but are a beginner to jazz, this is the perfect place to start your journey!
note: drummers are welcome, but I will coordinate so there is only one kit there. If you are a drummer who is interested, let me know and I'll coordinate who brings kit and what parts. It's a smaller space, and I want to keep the volume down to an acoustic guitar compatible level.
February 7th, at Kingston Community House also known as 99 York street. doors at 6, lesson starts at 6:30.
We will be asking for a donation suggested at $15, but this event will be Pay What You Can, and no-one will be turned away for lack of funds. There are roughly enough seats for 30 in the room, so in the event that we reach capacity, we will have to turn some away. Come early to secure your spot! Bring acoustic instruments, and try and learn the melody on your instrument before you attend. I will provide charts the day of. If you want to do more homework, come up with a list of your 5 favourite recordings of autumn leaves, and listen for licks that you might want to learn yourself.
