Event Description
Today is a special day for CanUS, paying tribute to three outstanding musicians who are, one would hope, making music in another heavenly place. Mike Broadley, former CanUS trumpet player & singer as well as with Naden and so many other groups; Hugh Barclay, trombonist with popular Dixieland Express Jazz Band, and famous Borgy Borgerson, a “Hall of Fame” banjo player also most recent locally was also with Dixieland Express. They were well known to the fans of New Orleans jazz. and over the years created a jolly musical interaction that comes with mutual respect and years of sharing the love of this unique genre. They are sorely missed and lovingly remembered. Our internationally renown CanUS Jazz Band has world class musicians who move here to Victoria(usually thanks to a lovely Canadian love-mate). Newest to the group are Simon Stribling, former leader of Australia’s "Fireworks Jazz Band” and his mate, now our drummer, Lauri Lyster. They travelled world-wide & now living in Victoria . He joins local heroes of classic jazz, Al Pease, clarinet, Doug Rhodes, saxophone, Avram McCagherty, banjo, Joey Smith bass, and Toni Blodgett, band leader & tickling the ivories.
The location at Hermann’s Jazz Club combines a performance utopia with table service for food and beverages. Voted # 1 in Canada - a reservation is helpful to selecting the table location you favour. For a 7 piece band, the $20 ticket price (+tax & fees) seems very reasonable and the live music scene in Victoria is the envy of our fellow musicians far & wide.
