Back in 1981, singer Geoff Tate, guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton, bassist Eddie Jackson and drummer Scott Rockenfield founded Queensrÿche. In 1982 they released their self-produced, self titled debut EP on their own 206 record label. After the sale of over 60,000 records on 206, the major labels were falling over themselves to sign the band.
Although they were initially grouped in with the legions of pop/metal bands that dominated the American heavy metal scene of the '80s, Queensrÿche was one of the most distinctive bands of the era. Where their contemporaries built on the legacy of Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Kiss, Queensrÿche constructed a progressive form of heavy metal that drew equally from the guitar pyrotechnics of post-Van Halen metal and '70s art rock, most notably Pink Floyd and Queen.
After releasing a handful of albums, the band began to break into the mainstream with the acclaimed 1988 album Operation:mindcrime. Its follow-up, Empire, was the group's biggest success, selling over two million copies due to the hit single "Silent Lucidity."
In January 1998, Chris DeGarmo announced his departure from Queensrÿche. After several months of discussions, the position was filled by longtime Queensrÿche friend and producer Kelly Gray. Tate says, “Kelly fit right in and really added an important ingredient to the writing chemistry the four of us already had.” With Gray now in the mix, the band found themselves re-energized, and began creating a bunch of compelling new songs.
A "greatest hits" set will open the show, and after a short break, the band will return to perform Operation:mindcrime in its entirety. Audiences will be blown away by the Surround Sound audio setup on the tour.
Don’t miss Queensrÿche live at the Vancouver Centre For Performing Arts on Wednesday, September 14th.
