Attention dance and music lovers! If you haven’t heard of Lia Grainger and Flamencolía Ensemble yet, you’re in for a treat. The incredible talent of this ensemble has been blowing audiences across Canada away with their spectacular flamenco music and dance performances.
For those of you who don’t know, flamenco is a style of music and dance that originates in Spain. It’s known for its hypnotic rhythms, passionate singing and dancing, and intricate guitar playing. Flamencolía Ensemble is an esteemed group of nationally renowned flamenco artists, including Dora Award-nominated dancer Lia Grainger, who has toured Canada and Europe for the past seven years, and recently returned to Canada after 5 years living in Seville, the cradle of flamenco. Jewish-Indigenous flamenco singer and dancer Tamar Ilana also joins the ensemble. Tamar is a pillar of the world music and dance community in Toronto, and also heads the prolific Mediterranean ensemble, Ventanas. Joining them is legendary Canadian flamenco guitarist Nicolás Hernández (formerly of Jesse Cook’s touring ensemble), along with Latin singing sensation Ana Lía, who has just released a new solo album and brings a Dominican spice to the group. Flamencolía Ensemble performs flamenco music and dance that is alive with passion and infused with Latin, Mediterranean and contemporary flair.
