Event Description

Lafayette String Quartet
With Vivian Fung, composer

The Lafayette String Quartet is thrilled to present the world premiere of Vivian Fung’s latest quartet “Spiraling,” commissioned by the LSQ as part of their B.K. Weigel Legacy Project. Also on the program is Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59, No. 3, and Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 4.

Arrive early for a pre-concert talk with composer Vivian Fung at 7:45 pm in the Recital Hall.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JUNO Award-winning composer VIVIAN FUNG has a unique talent for combining idiosyncratic textures and styles into large-scale works, reflecting her multicultural background. NPR calls her “one of today’s most eclectic composers.” This is supported by many of her works, including Clarinet Quintet: Frenetic Memories, a reflection on her travels to visit minority groups in China’s Yunnan province; Earworms, commissioned by Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, which musically depicts our diverted attention spans and multi-tasking lives; and The Ice Is Talking for solo percussion and electronics, commissioned by the Banff Centre, using three ice blocks to illustrate the beauty and fragility of our environment.

Formed in 1986 in Detroit, the LAFAYETTE STRING QUARTET still comprises its four original female members, a distinct and welcome rarity in the classical music world. All members of the LSQ have taught and performed at the UVic School of Music for over 35 years. With more than a dozen albums and a thousand appearances worldwide behind them, the LSQ will retire as an ensemble — 2022/23 marks their final season.
