The Island illustrators Society presents a new exhibit
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - and Other Favourite Songs." in at the Tillicum Mall
July 6 to July 25 at the Tillicum Mall, lower level
Covid times have been a challenge for many - this includes visual and performing artists. Unfortunately,
numerous shops and art galleries have gone by the wayside due to Covid closures.
What everyone, including members of the Island Illustrators Society, seem to be missing is personal
connections. Meetings were not possible, nor a place for an annual exhibition. The planned show for
September 2020 at the Gallery in Cedar Hill Recreation Center was cancelled due to Covid.
Brenda, the Saanich Community Exhibitions coordinator came up with a solution. She contacted Society president
Marcia Semenoff, offering interested members a spacious, secured storefront space behind glass for a
show.
Marcia thought this was an excellent idea and informed Society members. On short notice, five members
presented works at the Tillicum Mall storefront windows, their show running from June 15 until July 6.
Both the artists and the public were quite appreciative of the art that brought new life to the closed
storefront.
In the meantime, a second series of themed works are being created by members of the Island
Illustrators Society, and these will replace the former show.
President Marcia Semenoff recently read an article about the importance of music for our health, and how
people turn to music in times of stress. She immediately thought of the Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky
with Diamonds,'' with the lyrics full of colourful imagery. She was inspired to illustrate this theme, and
proposed to Illustrator members to create works based on the same song or on their own inspirational
song.
The Island Illustrators Society is pleased to announce their upcoming themed exhibition, "Lucy in the Sky
with Diamonds - and Other Favourite Songs." The show will run from July 6 until July 25th. Drop by the
Tillicum Mall, lower level, and view these imaginative new works -- all socially distanced and displayed
behind glass.
