Trish Shwart’s recent work focuses on the connection she feels to particular places in the natural world. The climate emergency is a very real consideration in all of her work and she acknowledges the conflict of feeling linked to nature while acknowledging she is part of a society that threatens it. In her paintings Trish creates a luscious otherworld that explores the permeable boundaries between what she sees and what she feels. The paintings are a blend of memories, dreams, and real-world experiences. Since the start of the pandemic, Trish has been painting en plein air and that time in nature comes back into the studio with her, energizing her work in unexpected ways.
Trish is a graduate of the University of Manitoba (Gold Medal) and the Emily Carr College of Art (Helen Pitt Graduate Award). Shwart has shown her work across Canada and in Australia. She has also been actively involved in Victoria artist-run centres such as Open Space and Xchanges Gallery. Some of her recent work can be viewed at the Winchester Gallery in Victoria, BC. These two paintings can also be found in an international online exhibition entitled “In Absentia” at cohortart.com
