The accordion takes centre stage at the UVic Chorus and Orchestra concert starring local virtuoso Jelena Milojević. Two large works make up the program: Misa a Buenos Aires (Misatango) by Argentinian composer Martin Palmeri and Fairy Tales for accordion and orchestra by Czech composer Václav Trojan.
Misatango incorporates two important musical experiences from the composer’s personal musical history: arranging tango music and directing choirs. The piece maintains all of the characteristics of tango (the harmonies, rhythms and melodic designs) within the orchestral score, allowing the chorus to have full liberty to “sing the mass.” Fairy Tales is a suite bursting with musical humor, invention and virtuosity, with evocative movement titles such as The Naughty Roundabout, The Sleepy Princess and The Acrobatic Fairy-tale.
Born and raised in Croatia, Jelena Milojević is an internationally recognized classical accordionist with performances described as “an explosion of cosmic sensuality.” School of Music student and mezzo-soprano, Cassidy Stahr, will also appear as a soloist in Misatango.
