Event Description
To start off 2020, the APTL Ensemple will premiere rach/ruach (4), the newest piece by APTL co-founder Daniel Brandes. Daniel began writing this (still ongoing) work in the summer of 2019 as a birthday gift for Wandelweiser composer and flutist Antoine Beuger.
"rach/ruach (4) is part of a series of pieces inspired by Antoine's beautiful way of playing the flute, which is exposed, fragile, delicate, and courageous," says Daniel. "Each piece is composed as a way of remembering the sound of Antoine's playing."
Rach is the Hebrew word for that which is tender, gentle, and delicate, but also in some way strong. Rach is contained within the word Ruach, and means wind or breath, and also spirit.
"This newest piece, and the whole series of pieces, is about dwelling at the meeting place of Rach and Ruach," says Daniel.
For this performance, Daniel will play soprano melodica, and be gently accompanied and surrounded by his friends and fellow APTL Ensemble members Erik Abbink (saxophone), Laura Brandes (flute), Kristy Farkas (piano), and Nathan Friedman (clarinet).
"I hope this performance will offer a place of gentle and reflective refuge," says Daniel.
