Event Description
We are excited to announce the Maritime Museum of BC will be hosting the launch of Sisterships by Canadian author Elaine Gallagher! Over 100 years has passed since the tragic sinking of the great White Star Line. But little is written about the Titanic’s identical sister – the Olympic.
“Sisterships”, by Elaine Gallagher, tells the tale of Betsy Oakes, a recently unemployed governess in England’s Midlands in 1912. Inspired to travel alone to Canada she excitedly books passage on Titanic’s maiden voyage. A stroke of luck forces her to be rebooked on the ship’s identical ship the Olympic on its next sailing following the tragic sinking. On board she forms a close friendship with a stewardess and over the course of the passage they unveil their stories of lives, loves and amazingly, their mutual survival of the Titanic demise. Readings of historical fiction will be fascinated by the 40 years of research that make their way into this gripping tale.
The book launch will be taking place at the Maritime Museum of BC from 5:00pm – 6:00pm on May 4th.The event will include a slide show and reading from “Sisterships” by Dr. Elaine Gallagher, author and granddaughter of the book’s heroin Betsy Oakes. The historical fiction is her first novel, following an award-winning career as an academic at the University of Victoria
