Event Description

Last year For Body and Light’s production of Coming & Going flooded the stage in eight cities, won them stellar reviews and set them on a tour that lasted 50 shows through Canada and the US.

This year For Body and Light comes back to the West Coast with a brand new show called Bear Dreams.

Bear Dreams is the story of a young couple who go searching, first for each other, then for the heart of a country. As they move West their voyage links with those of the first ice age explorers, and later with the voyageurs and the explorers who mapped this country. Their journey turns into a passionate sense of belonging, belonging to the snow, to winter forts they made when they were kids, to a fiery passion winter seems to fuel.

Finally, high up in the Rockies where the snow hardly ever melts, they encounter an animal spirit that changes the course of their lives, protecting not only them, but their ancestors, their children and—some say—even you. This original production brings the audience into a healing ritual centuries old.

Bear Dreams is animal magic fired by stories, music and dance. In this deeply evocative production, choreographer Stephanie Morin-Robert and poet/musician Ian Ferrier blend narration, music and the company’s trademark use of lighting with the intimate dance of two top Montreal dancers, Danika Cormier and Joachim Yensen-Martin.

Each show begins with an opening set by a local poet or performer. This year performers are Aaron Simm, Scott Thompson, Jeremy Loveday, SJ Valiquette, Ann-Bernice Thomas, Ali Riley
