Event Description
On July 16, author Tim Rogers will talk about and read from his new book “The Mystery of the SS Southern Cross” at the Shoal Centre in Sidney. The book is a fictional account of the tragic and mysterious sinking of the SS Southern Cross off Newfoundland’s southeast coast in 1914.
Tim became intrigued by the story of the Southern Cross while studying the folklore and music of Newfoundland. He found several ballads about the sealing ship’s disappearance and wrote several academic articles about the event and its devastating human toll (173 crew members were lost at sea). But Tim says, “These articles failed to quell the growing need to tell the human side of this great story.” His novel intertwines the vibrant pre-war Newfoundland setting with the rich and complex events that led to this great tragedy, at the same time honouring the memory of her gallant crew.
An accomplished musician with a strong interest in Canada’s folk music, Tim Rogers will perform songs drawn from Newfoundland tradition that touch on the times and setting of the book. A music CD accompanies the book.
This special event is a fundraiser for the 2015 Sidney and Peninsula Literary Festival.
