For many years now, CiTR listeners, programmers, and staff alike have pined for better reception. Admittedly, in the past our transmitter has had more bugs than your East Van digs. Despite some technical difficulties, CiTR is the most listened-to independent radio station in B.C., as well as voted to be the second favourite radio station in Vancouver (tied with Z95.3) in this year’s “Georgia Straight ‘Best Of’s”. As accessibility to the community has always been the foundation of CiTR–the station and its resources exist to serve, entertain, inform, and represent Vancouver–we are overjoyed to announce our acquisition of a new TRANSMITTER which will allow us to be reached from Point Grey east to Langley, north to Squamish and south to our neighbours in Bellingham, Washington. And this time, you will receive us MINUS the wall of fuzz and distortion!

To offset the staggering costs of our new technology, CiTR has had a series of benefits, the height of which shall be this upcoming benefit on February 4th.

CiTR is honoured and so very excited to present an old and loving friend of ours: D.O.A. Those of us who are familiar with their history recall that in the 80s’, the UBC SUB ballroom was D.O.A. stomping ground. Now, at long last, they’ve come home. How can we summarize the influence and impact this seminal punk act has had? They are subject of many books and discourses, not excluding lead singer/songwriter/Godfather of Punk Joey “Shithead” Keithley’s popular book, I, Shithead: a Life in Punk (Arsenal Pulp Press). As attested in last year’s twelfth studio album Live Free or Die! D.O.A. has, since their formation in 1978, unfailingly remained explosive, corrosive, innovative, and political. They are now renowned as the band that brought the word “hardcore” into common vernacular with their classic album, Hardcore ’81. Recently, Mayor Larry Campbell declared December 21st to be “D.O.A. Day” in Vancouver! The current lineup includes Joey, The Great Baldini on drums and new bassist Damned Dan Yaremko [of Econoline Crush, Bif Naked].

Back in summer of 2002, when all were huddled around Sonic Youth’s Murray Street and The Rapture’s Echoes, a local band rose from the sludgy streets of Vancouver and slapped us across the face with their debut, CitySick. Since that summer whirlwind of heated hype, The Nasty On gone on to greater glory, opening for acts like The Yardbirds, The Damned, The Rapture, The Spitfires, and were even hand-picked by MC5 for an opening slot. And hey, what’s good enough for MC5 is good enough for anyone. Yes, they are recording a new album, and as lead singer Jason Grimmer assures us, “it will be very good.”

But we aren’t the only ones hyping these lads:

"Ten years from now CitySick is going to be remembered as a landmark in Vancouver rock 'n' roll, a record that seemingly roared out of nowhere." Georgia Straight

"Vancouver's Nasty On proves on its new full-length CD that its rep as one of Canada's brightest rock units is deserved. Ten cuts of Stooges-meets-Amphetamine Reptile-style noise cut right to the bone…" The Province

You say party! We say die! have worked hard in the last year to recruit and seduce a devout following in their hometown of Abbotsford. Echoes of their parties reverberated to Vancouver, where they are rumoured to have a live show which slots them somewhere between Le Tigre and Erase Errata. Whisperings about this stylish six-piece have erupted, and in the next two months they will be playing with Pretty Girls Make Graves, Elizabeth, Bella, The Monicurs, the VEIN Magazine Launch Party, Cadueax, Fun100, Dandiwind, and Bakelite. We can shamelessly say that these girls and boys are THE NEXT BIG THING.

So come out and support CiTR, because as D.O.A. would say, “Talk – Action = 0”.
