Event Description
Next Music from Tokyo is a non-profit cross-Canada tour showcasing the best independent and underground music from Japan. Zazen Boys, mouse on the keys, NATSUMEN, group_inou, Akai Koen, sgt., Charan-Po-Rantan, and Mass of the Fermenting Dregs are just a few examples of the great bands that have participated in previous tours.
In May 2014, NMFT vol 6 brings another spectacular line-up headlined by the return of one of the most popular bands to date: Kinoko Teikoku. They made their Canadian debut just last year but have plenty of new material and a legion of fans that requested a return visit immediately. Their unique brand of powerful shoegaze fronted by female guitarists and vocals may lead to a benignly sweet addiction.
Accompanying Kinoko Teikoku are three new bands:
Uchu Conbini (Outer Space Convenience Store) combine intricate guitarwork and drums with sublimely soothing female vocals for an impressive blend of 'math-pop.' Their innovative music videos and virtuoso musicianship have garnered a surprising amount of interest not only in Japan but worldwide.
Happy!Mari is geeky, emo, undergound pop filled with plenty of passion, power and wtf. The music is incredibly melodic, undeniably fresh and packs a formidable punch. #Hadouken!
jizue uphold NMFT's tradition of bringing the cream of the crop of Japanese instrumental bands to Canada. Beautiful jazz and post-rock mixing in electronic, hardcore, and latin beats for variety. An unbelievably talented band that oozes passion and energy when they play. Seeing them perform "Dance" alone is worth the price of admission.
And because the Japanese bands wanted to share the stage with a kickass local act, Sprïng (ex-SSRIs) will be performing as well to represent and show how Vancity kills it.
