Event Description
CHANT'OUEST:
After a year of lively discussions, cultural organizations from the West and the four regional Radio-Canada stations presented the first interprovincial song gala on June 8th, 1990 at la Faculté Saint-Jean in Edmonton. Since then, 150 different artists from the West and the North came onto the scene over the course of 23 editions.
Chant’Ouest – named in 1997- will soon finish its sixth lap. This is an achievement in this domain considering that it is the only francophone song contest in the country to take place annually across the provinces and territories. The fact that the Northern and the Western communities welcome Chant’Ouest successively, most often with entirely new teams, is a sign of dynamism and collaboration, which the organizers should be very proud of.
Other national partners of Chant’Ouest – Musicaction, SOCAN, Granby International Song Festival - have worked together with the event since its creation and remain valued partners.
Since 2010, Chant’Ouest has given Contact Ouest, a Réseau des Grands Espaces initiative and one of the most important crossroads for French art and in the West and in the North, a kick-off. Contact Ouest permits emerging artists to have a tangible foretaste of the industry and to make themselves known to Western, national, and even international distributors. This is a dream come true for our finalists.
Here we are in 2013, « song is rising in the capital », while British Columbia’s francophone cultural and artistic council and the Victoria Francophone Society welcome Chant’Ouest in Victoria.
