Event Description
“Cross Diana Krall with Susan Sontag, and you get Patricia Barber, whose throaty, come-hither vocals and incisive piano are displayed to devastating effect.” – Time Magazine
Chicago’s Patricia Barber is a uniquely talented singer/songwriter/pianist who brilliantly straddles the junction of jazz and blues (with a few pop songs like “Ode To Billie Joe” thrown in for good measure). Notwithstanding Barber's technical finesse on piano notwithstanding, her songwriting, intriguing arrangements and low-register vocals are at the centre of her music-making. Starting in the ‘90s with CDs like "Cafe Blue" and "Modern Cool," Barber emerged as a confident stylist. That, combined with a hip performance style that was more cabaret than concert hall, earned her an increasingly large cult following. With over a dozen recordings, her latest and first on the Concord Jazz label, "Smash," is another tour de force of cool intellectualism and dazzling performance. Barber is a bold, one-of-a-kind artist who continues to evolve as both songwriter and performer. It has been far too long since we’ve had her at TD JazzFest, and we’re delighted she’s back. Dave Miller guitar, Matt Ulery bass and Jon Deitemyer drums
