Cowichan Country: An Artist’s Delight is a new temporary exhibit on view in the Priscilla Lowe Gallery at the Cowichan Valley Museum & Archives. It is said that there are more artists per capita in the Cowichan Valley than anywhere else in Canada. The valley has been an inspiration for western-trained artists since settlers began to arrive in the mid-19th century. This exhibit highlights Cowichan artists’ work, which includes paintings, sketches and drawings, from the Museum’s collection. The artists are as interesting and colourful as their artwork featured in this exhibit. Here are a few of the artists whose work is on view:
Lou Englehart had a passion for depicting industrial history. His paintings of beehive burners, symbols of the forestry industry in British Columbia, documented this disappearing technology.
Valuable historical records were created by artist Rosanna Hammond, whose charcoal sketches depict local First Nations elders.
George Lister Thornton Sharp graduated from the Royal Academy of Architecture in London, England. During his architectural career he was an original member of the Vancouver town planning commission and a founding partner of Sharp & Thompson, which became Thompson, Berwick, Pratt and Partners. This was the longest lasting architectural firm in British Columbia and the official firm of the University of British Columbia in 1912.
Gaylia Nelson’s passion for the past could be seen in the sketches of historical buildings and structures, including the Kinsol Trestle, featured in the Cowichan News Leader and Pictorial newspapers for many years.
The Cowichan Leader newspaper described the sketchbooks and paintings of Ethel Leather: ‘In them the Cowichan countryside, in its various seasonal aspects, have for many years been beautifully depicted in watercolour.’
The artwork in this exhibit provides a fascinating view of the Cowichan Valley through the eyes of its artists. The exhibit will be on view until June 8, 2013.
