Event Description
Touring New Yorker Daryl Shawn joins two of Vancouver's own, Arn Rhys and Beavor, for a night of original music at Café Duex Soleils. Expect an evening full of literate wordplay and a dose of guitar acrobatics.
An alumnus of Berklee College of Music who went on to develop his craft during five years in Oaxaca, Mexico, Daryl Shawn combines his taste for unusual chords with the guitar-thumping techniques of flamenco and rhythms culled from African music to create an eclectic mix fueled by a healthy appetite for rocking out (and sometimes, blissing out). Shawn complements his impressive guitar skills with winsome, colorful rhymes - think a mix of Rodrigo y Gabriela's chops and Paul Westerberg's wounded soul. He visits Vancouver as part of a two-week tour taken almost exclusively by train.
The latest release from Arn Rhys, "Chapel of the Fool", succeeds mightily in its aim to pay homage to wooden guitars and old-style folk. The turn-of-the-century (that would be the 20th, not the 21st) vibe is a fitting background to the whispered, delicate turns of phrase that mark this artist. Have a Sazerac and lean close.
Formed in late 2010, Beavor is a five-piece Vancouver-based rock band founded by lead singer/guitarist Steven Beddall, formerly of Fuzzcat. Bringing a variety of roots music influences to the table, Beavor is a modern take on folk, blues and rock'n'roll with a splash of dusty psychedelia.
