VICTORIA - Local jazz pianist Ashley Wey is delighted to return home after nearly a decade of living and touring abroad to release her full-length debut CD,
Star Seeds, at Hermann’s Jazz Club on Saturday, Nov. 26, starting at 8:30pm.
Armed with a collection of original jazz compositions along with her favorite love songs, Ashley went into the recording studio this past spring. Backing her on the album are two long-time friends and musical compatriots, drummer extraordinaire Kelby McNyair and esteemed bassist Sean Drabitt.
Star Seeds, blends the musical influences of folk, jazz, pop and soul into fun yet heartfelt melodies. Known for her energetic piano playing, warm demeanor and dazzling smile, Ashley knows how to woo a crowd through her music. Special guests include world-renowned singer Azure McCall on "Nice and Easy," and violinist Taylor Rankin on "Torres" and Argentinean guitarist Pablo De Luca on "Dindi."
Ashley has worked and toured with many noteworthy artists, including 2006 Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila, Belinda Brady, Brandi Disterhaft, Mae Moore, Chris Rouse, Joni Nehrita, Pearl Kaufman, American Idol star Kimberly Locke, and the Juno Award-winning group, The Parachute Club. Recently she toured Europe with four-time Grammy Award winner, Manny Kellough.
While working on the recordings over the past year, Ashley took some time out to perform at the TD Victoria International Jazz Festival supporting Mae Moore and play at Victoria ’s Ska Festival with Chris Murray and the New Victorians.
As producer, composer and performer on the album, she combines all of her influences, and gives them a bold new voice that she hopes will resonate with listeners across Canada and around the world.
