ARI SHINE
Indeed, from the unabashed exuberance of songs like All Ive Got Is Love to the sophisticated mix of melody and mayhem embraced on Here With Me, Shine shines and puts many artists boasting a far lengthier trajectory on notice that they face formidable competition. Heres an up and comer whos got his groove, both literally and figuratively, and even a first listen is all it takes to convince. Ghost Town Directory not only begs repeated returns, but gets better and more engaging every single time. -NO DEPRESSION
Ari Shine is quickly becoming the singer/songwriter to watch in 2011. He plays rootsy rock with an eye for lyrical detail and an ear for classic pop song-craft. The heartfelt melodies and unfiltered lyrics he delivers retain the same unabashed hooks and energy whether in solo acoustic performance or with full band backing. After a number of critically acclaimed releases which earned him praise in such sources as the Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times and even from legendary Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham, Ari has arrived with his most personal and versatile batch of tunes.
Speaking on the creation of his new album Ghost Town Directory(Beverly Martel) Shine says My last album A Force Of One was purposely going after a classic late 70s power pop sound, even going so far as to use veteran producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, Beach Boys, Concrete Blonde) to recreate the vibe of that era. I did a ton of touring after that album, much of which was solo acoustic shows and I decided that before I recorded my new album I was just going to write songs on my acoustic guitar not geared toward any specific genre; just songs that worked by themselves without outside adornment.
Shine has racked up plenty of miles himself through the U.S., U.K. and Canada, opening for artists like Rhett Miller, John Doe, Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers, Redd Kross, Silversun Pickups, The Donnas, Liam Finn and many others. Most recently Ari was handpicked to support Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters on his entire summer 2010 solo tour. Im proud of how much Ive toured over the past few years. The wide range of artists I have played with has really helped me grow as a performer and as a writer. Its a testament to the strength of the songs when you can just strap on a guitar and play to an audience who have come for an entirely different style of music and have them leave as fans.
SARAH WHEELER
"Sarah Wheeler has a voice that should lead a large-scale gospel choir."
- Kerry Gold, Vancouver Sun
Instead of Neko Case's swooping country intonations and general high-end foil, A.C. Newman harmonizes here with Sarah Wheeler, who adds exultant punctuation to the track.
-Brandon Stosuy Pitchfork.com
Sarah Wheeler is a dyed-in-the-wool singer songwriter. With the upcoming release of her third album, Out of the Woodwork, Sarahs ambition is to present her songs in a direct and passionate way. Although she has enjoyed collaborating with other musicians, lending her vocals to recordings such as A Small Wonder by A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers, and sharing the stage with bands including the Be Good Tanyas, this Vancouver-based roots artist has remained focused on writing and performing her own music with vigilant integrity.
Sarah Wheeler is a Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is motivated and driven creatively by her passions and interests. The music that hits closest to the heart for Sarah is folk and alternative country roots music.
KENT MCALISTER
Spanish-flavoured tales of nautical slavery, witty beer-soaked laments, and the temptation of murderous revenge all mark How I'll Remain, the third release by Kent McAlister & The Iron Choir. Songwriter and front man Kent McAlister captures the grit and honesty of traditional country music, all the while intertwining his music with a progressive mix of rock and jazz.
Recorded by Jesse Gander (The Pack, Corbin Murdoch, Bison, Buttless Chaps) at Hive Creative Labs in Burnaby, BC., How Ill Remain features for the first time, two songs by drummer Brendan Krieg, who joined The Iron Choir in 2007. Add to this a band of the highest-calibre talent Vancouver has to offer, and it's easy to see why they have enthralled audiences coast to coast while gaining a tour van and trailers worth of glowing reviews across North America.
