. Friday, November 2nd I.M.U. presents MOSES MAYES (from Winnepeg) w/ special guests GIRL NOBODY & The HERMIT @ The Media Club, 695 Cambie . Doors 8pm
MOSES MAYES - Classic funk grooves, slick guitar riffs, punchy horn lines, old school keys and turntable cuts - this is Moses Mayes. A sound defined by the vision of three students of groove that encompasses elements of past and modern funk fusion, the music of Moses Mayes has been moving people on the dance floor and from their stereos across North America since 1999. Their live performances have earned them a reputation as one of the best acts in their scene, playing to festival and club audiences and leading the new funk fusion sound over the past 7 years. Add two full length releases, a three song EP, a Western Canadian Music Award and thousands of sales and you have an accumulation of years of experience in orchestrating grooves and exploring sonic frontiers. ‘Second Ring’, the third full-length album from Moses Mayes, was produced by veteran dance floor killer Jamie Shields (the New Deal). Classic Moses dance-funk grooves and signature jazz horns combine with guest vocals by Sherry St. Germain, Ariane Jean and PHATT al, each of whom adds their own flavour to the Moses sound. The result is a new take on modern dance music with songs that incorporate elements from the genres of funk fusion, jazz, house and pop.
GIRL NOBODY is one of the few bands that can offer cerebral charm and sexual bravado with a lullaby of pop swoon while continually stretching musical boundaries. Marta Jaciubek-McKeever, with her intoxicating voice and stage presence, effortlessly glides through songs spinning tales of alienation and aliens one minute, firing off political rants the next. All the while the rest of the band (Joey Turco, Jimmy Northey, Jeremiah Schneider) provides huge helpings of sophistication and flair, switching instruments from song to song. Their music has been variously described as eerie Berlin cabaret, electro-pop meets The Who, and adventurous songs that sound more inspired by Kurt Weill than modern pop.
The HERMIT is an award-winning live indie/pop/electronica band founded by drummer and musician Hamish Thomson in Vancouver, Canada. The HERMIT recently completed their third album, Turn Up (The Stereo), with co-producer Krish Sharma (Perry Farrell, Rolling Stones). The HERMIT's independently-released 2001 debut album, Flying Out Of Solitude - largely a solo studio effort recorded and produced by Thomson himself with the help of engineer/mixer wiz Mike Rogerson - garnered multiple West Coast Music Award nominations in his native Canada and led to a record deal with Nettwerk Records
