Event Description
The Crew of the Victoria Nautical Song Circle "musters" weekly for a friendly session of sea songs. No special training, equipment or information is required. There is no membership fee or application form to fill out. Apply for and maintain your "membership" with your voice and your feet! We're rather informal and not too snooty, so bring:
Your voice and your interest
Maybe a wee notepad to jot down some info
We may have some copies of songs we're introducing or working up though it might be an idea to check out:
the public library
internet sources and
your local book store. See Pusser's Stores for reasons the Maritime Museum of BC's deal on Hugill's book is a great one. 250-385-4222. Also available at Compass Rose Nautical Books in Sidney, 250-656-4674
Maybe you could bring some material.
Feel free to bring a tape recorder to capture some tunes and words, also be prepared to leave it off if someone present requests.
When: Saturday evenings, every second week commencing 4 Jan 2003 (4 & 18 Jan/1 & 15 Feb/1, 15 & 29 Mar/12 & 26 Apr, 10 & 24 May, 7 & 21 June, 5 & 19 July, 2, 16 & 30 Aug, 13 & 27 Sep, 11 & 25 Oct, 8 & 22 Nov 2003). Always check here or at the phone number for any last minute venue changes.
NEW TIME! Now 3 Bells in the Last Dog Watch! That's 1930 or 7:30 p.m. for song circles at the Bent Mast('til about three bells in the First Watch, err, 9:30 p.m. - go when you like/need, stay longer, ...)
Where: Upstairs at The Bent Mast Restaurant, 512 Simcoe St. in James Bay.
The Bent Mast is "across" from the Thrifty Food mart at the 5-way intersection of Menzies, Simcoe and Toronto Streets.
How: Parking around back, or some on any of the streets (one way approach on Toronto from Government by the JBI), be cautious of 'residential parking' sections. Bike racks by sidewalk and transit available. Victoria Regional Transit System, "BC Transit" has changed it's routes effective 2 Sep 2003. Call 382-6161, check their 'Rider's Guide' book or web site for info.
Bus routes now serving the Bent Mast are 27/28 Downtown/Beacon Hill and 30 /31 James Bay/Beacon Hill, both South bound. The "just in time" selections are the 27 leaving Fort & Douglas at 7:13 p.m., jump off at Thrifty's/Simcoe St. and the 31 leaving Fort & Douglas at 7:09 p.m., get off at Menzies and walk South two blocks. Web site maps for the 27 aren't quite accurate for the southern route terminus, they use 'Erie & Dallas Rd' in the book and 'Coast Guard Worksite' on the web site for the same location, none of the maps, web site or book, show the streets properly... you know how it is, 'bad charts'!
Gerry of The Bent Mast has graciously allowed us the use of the upstairs room. They are licensed as a restaurant, so last call is 4 Bells of the Middle Watch, ok, that's 0200 (yup, 2:00 a.m.).
The best way to keep abreast of goings on is to call 250-380-7442 or get on our e-mail or phone list.
