Robert Glasper Trio
Blue Note recording star Robert Glasper is one of the most interesting piano innovators in the jazz world today. Raised in Texas, the young Glasper was taken to many jazz and blues clubs by his mom, a professional musician. That early schooling paid off and Glasper soon showed an affinity for jazz piano and moved to NYC, where he got to play with the likes of Christian McBride, Russell Malone and Terence Blanchard. But Glasper was the perfect age to become attracted to hip-hop, and was also associating with a who’s whoof hip-hop stars including Mos Def, Q-Tip and Jay-Z. Probably best known for being at the cutting edge of modern acoustic jazz, the 32-year-old Glasper also has a second band to express the hip-hop side to his musical personality. And even though he’s bringing his acoustic jazz trio to Victoria, Glasper often creates experimental soundscapes where feelings of space, rhythm and chord textures often flow like a hip-hop beat. This is going to be one of JazzFest’s most exciting debuts! With Derrick Hodge bass and Mark Colenburg drums.
