SKATERS at Kerry Park Recreation in Mill Bay are carrying on a very cool old/new sport originating over 60 years ago in the 1940s by the California surfer crowd. Young people of all ages gather here to practice and indulge in skateboarding as well as scooting and biking. They are exercising their freedom and will tell you they like to be hangin’ out in a comfortable place where everyone is accepted with a few adults around some of the time and no hassles any time. Another stated they like everything, the people and being outside. It’s a good place to be, everyone’s respectful, and you get to do tricks in the skater lifestyle. This is possible only at a skate park as one enthusiast said he only has a “half-pipe” at home and his friend only has gravel. Sometimes a game is played called ‘skate’ (or ‘scoot’ or ‘bike’) where you get a letter if you don’t do your trick and when any player has spelled the full word, they are out. The regular skaters have beautified their pavement paradise with painting, graffiti, and some more elaborate “tags” are the legacy of skaters that do not come too often but are welcome anytime. Groups have formed such as Fallen Acorn and another group is supported by the company Happy Wax. Anyone can head down to Victoria West where there is a larger skate park and competitions are held. If you are looking for culture in Mill Bay, this has got to be on your list of places to visit. Bring your lunch and visit with the locals and see the ‘tail whip’, ‘a tweak’ or ‘X Up’, the ‘bar spin’, the ‘table’, and the ‘360◦ out of the bowl’.
