Featuring three of Chicago’s finest improvisers, the Indigo Trio rewards audiences with some of the most exciting, original music around. Flutist Nicole Mitchell is the founder of the critically acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble and Black Earth Strings. Down Beat magazine Critics Poll Winner for Rising Star Flutist 2006, she has performed with George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, Miya Masaoka, and James Newton. She will be a resident artist of the Festival and conductor of the TD Canada Trust High School Jazz Intensive. Hamid Drake has long been recognized as one of the best drummers in improvised music. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, Drake has collaborated extensively with top free jazz improvisers Peter Brotzmann, Fred Anderson, and Ken Vandermark. He’s also worked with Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, and William Parker. Premier bassist Harrison Bankhead is best known for his work with Ed Wilkerson’s 8 Bold Souls. He has also collaborated with Oliver Lake, Joshua Redman, Von Freeman, and Billy Harper.
