Hey there, anyone here from Nanaimo? Vancouver metal bands come over there to play at Dizzy's (great room; would be better if it weren't empty all the time) and there are never any notices for their shows! Is anyone out there willing to do postering, flyers? The bar and the town are notorious for not advertising. It would be a shame to stop having out of town bands play there altogether because of this. If you know anyone, contact me at [email protected] - Mon, 29 Dec 2003 9:25am

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT EVER play at Dizzy's... the place is an absolute farce just like the fools who run it. They never advertise, the place is, like you said, always empty and they don't know shit about how to put on a show. Your best bet is to organize an all-ages event of your own and do your own promotion... it's the only way you'll be sure that there is adequate advertising. - Thu, 1 Jan 2004 8:12pm

The funny thing Jesse, is that one of the bands she manages is already booked in there for Feb 26th. :D

Kind of hard for out of town band managers to promote or setup all ages shows in Nanaimo. It would be nice if there was some local Nanaimo promoters to work with on that sort of thing, who can make arrangements and do promo. The reason we keep returning to Dizzy's is that its setup, the bands just have to arrive and play.

BTW:

Omega Crom ( Vancouver , first show with new drummer )
Divinity ( from Calgary )
Meatlocker Seven ( first show with new drummer )

Dizzy's is actually a wicked venue if it weren't for the management. When they started out, I actually loved playing there. They have a slayin sound setup and good overall layout. Their old sound guy kicked ass too, hopefully they have a competent dude manning the boards nowadays, I haven't been there in a while. - Fri, 2 Jan 2004 7:29pm

Never play Dizzy's, I've played there twice the first time about a half a dozen people were there and it sucked ass. So the owner gave us a saturday night show and a gaurantee. We went up and there wasnt a single poster up anywhere. As we were loading gear they put up one poster for the show in the window of the bar. Then they told us we had to work the door ourselves if we wanted to get paid. So once again about a half a dozen people showed up. The manager wouldnt give us our gaurantee, he gave us half of it, plus stiffed us on our drink tab we were supposed to have as well. Not only that, he didnt want to get beat up so he left the bar and phoned down and told the girl bartender to deal with it so he wouldnt have to. Left her alone in the bar with an angry band and fucked off. I've played hundreds of shows and I have never dealt with a grosser individual than the manager of that bar. What's his fucking name? Barney or something I think. Anyways, I would never as long as I live willing set foot into any bar that he has anything to do with ever again. - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 9:53am

We deal with bars down here not promoting well for local acts but if you cant draw in your own town, want to play shows, then you had better promo the shit out of your shit. heheh. But not promoting an out of town band is just a big fuckin waste of time for everyone including the bar manager. Great venue, retarded management - Tue, 6 Jan 2004 5:21pm

We've played up there a few times.
Each time there was a different soundguy. Each sound guy was hyped up by other musicians. Each one of them sucked very much.
And yes, the promotion up there is low grade bullshit. - Sat, 10 Jan 2004 4:38pm

Bernie Gobeil is the manager's name and he's a fuckin slimeball. No postering is done for Dizzy's. The Limecellar will be a better all ages venue now that it has new tenants.

Dizzy's is a shithole though. Plus I heard they've been prone to strange microphone problems. - Sat, 17 Jan 2004 2:09pm
