S.V. I came across this little gem once again. Who knows if it's entirely acurate, but it does make you stop and think.

Our World in Perspective

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans

52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be non-white
30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States.

80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 would have a college education
1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.

The following is also something to ponder...

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 3:53pm
Trailer Park Boy Julian That's good SV! Having some kind of perspective is crucial to understanding the world we live in. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 5:38pm
Jo Fancy I'm wondering how it works out that six of those people would posses 59% of the world's wealth, all of which would be from the united states, though only one of them would have a computer. Very interesting, though. - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 11:23pm
The Voice Of Reason Hell, I'm poor as hell, and somehow earned enough money for a pretty decent computer. But the fact that I'm marginalized and at the same time have such a tool of communication to create, educate and learn from so many sources kind of gives me some perspective as to the society we'r in. threw so much conglomoration of information, I'm exited to see what is churned out by lone skeptics and watchdogs that aren't restricted to advertisers, censorship or other commercial ties.

S.V. Yeah I also wonder how the top 6 would only have one computer between them. I can believe that 6 Americans could own 59% of the wealth...just consider Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey & Martha Stewart (well maybe not Martha anymore :).

These "stats" have been floating around the net for ages, so I know it's outdated. If anything the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting fucked over even more. But the part that that stands out to me is that I'm considered to be among the 8% wealthiest in the world (according to this). Something to consider when I'm having bad day.

I just love spreading a little sunshine wherever I go ;) - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 9:39am
Patrick I don't understand how 70 of the 100 people would be unable to read, and yet only 2 billion of earth's 6 billion+ are unable to read. That's 70% vs. 33.3% (or so).

I feel sorry for all the people who can't read, because they'll never really know what percentage of the world they make up. - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 1:14pm
Anonymous Bill Gates, McDonalds and Proctor & Gamble. Bastards. - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 1:21pm
Anonymous wow that thing is way off.
did some un educated moron think that up.

it borders on racism.

how many of them play an instrument.

the reason the six richest people don't have a computer is because you don't need one to become rich.(bill gates is an exception) and once you are rich why would you be sitting around on a saturday morning typing on some chat board.

the computer belongs to the poor homosexual accountant that runs the bank.he's scamming money from all of them rich or poor. - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 1:53pm
Jo Fancy I moreso feel bad for those whom can't read as they'll never know the ever loving ever giving thing that is LiveVictoria - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 3:14pm
Anonymous Haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahah! Now THAT was great! - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 3:38pm
S.V. How does this border on racism? Because it mentions non-whites & whites? The main thing I get from reading it, is how thankful I am to have the life and opportunities I have (being fortunate enough to live in this country). I guess it's all just a matter of "perspective" and what you read into it. - Sat, 8 Mar 2003 5:39pm
