Hi! No doubt you've all heard about the controversy around Marc Emery, leader of the BC Marijuana Party. His store has been openly selling marijuana seeds for a decade in Vancouver, with no arrests or trouble from police. The US wants to extradite him to face 10 years to life in prison (even EXECUTION) , for something that Canadians have deemed not even enough to be arrested. Marc Emery funded almost all activism in North America through this seed outlet, so the DEA is striking at our heart. For more information: http://www.cannabisculture.com and go to the forums.

We need to make a stand, and we need to make our message loud and clear, using the power of Rock and Roll.

So i propose this: A Rock Benefit for the Legal Defence of Marc Emery. "Remember, You're Canadian!"

I want to remind people that we have different views than the Americans, and they have no right telling us how to enforce our drug laws. If this case is won, it will set a precedent that Canadians are subject to US drug laws. We are all at risk.

I need bands to step up and commit themselves for an Aug. 26th show at Steamers. (soon i know, but timing isn't on our side). And I need bands to commit by wednesday morning, so we can get the publicity rolling. This is a benefit, and no one is being paid. We want to raise money for the legal defence, as fighting the US government is expensive.

The pot community will be forever in your debt, and you will be apart of something big. We will have an MC and possibly some politicians around for a few words. We can probably chip in for some beers, and who knows what people will donate for some helpful bands. ;)

On Sept. 10th, there will be a rally in Vancouver, and we want to get as many people over there as we can.

This is about Canadian sovereignty, and not just another 420 event.

Though I'm not a huge fan of pot, I think that this is really none of the US's business. Btw Tim, even though we're underage, we can still play bar shows. *shrug*. - Tue, 16 Aug 2005 6:43pm

I support seperation from american culture but am strongly against drugs. maybe he had it coming for him? it's not fair that you're asking people to support him, when we don't know what the USA has against him exactly. if he was, say, sponsering huge drug transportation projects across the border, then that's not fair at all.

if you want to protect him for being such a canadian, then he shouldn't have violated the laws of another nation in that way. that's like a doused-down version of me going across the border, killing someone, then coming back and having a rock show in my benefit because I beat some people up here.

like I said, I don't know what he did to piss off the authorities down there. I'm assuming it's drug-related though. maybe if you provided people with all the facts, they'd be willing to help. - Wed, 17 Aug 2005 12:00am

According to the new york times, MARC EMERY has made over 1 million dollars selling seeds over the internet. Why does he need a benefit thrown for him. Looks to me he was playing with fire and got burned.

I personally believe its the silent majority of marijuana smokers that have made vancouver a so called haven, not outspoken activists like Mr EMERY.

Why don't you throw a benefit for a cause that actually needs serious attention, like the aids epidemic in africa or literacy campaigns in 3rd world countries. Change the lives of thousands of people, not just one. - Wed, 17 Aug 2005 5:48pm

Hell yeah, csic. Maybe if some people spent more time paying attention to the laws of another country, and less time smoking pot, they'd come to there senses and realize that breaking those laws has consequences. I don't support US foreign policy in the slightest, but in this case they're policing a Canadian who has broken American laws, not Canadian ones. Emery's dealings with his American customers, for right or wrong, has been deemed illegal by that country. We as Canadians don't have the right to dictate how the US deals with people breaking their laws. And if we tried, we would be as guilty as they are of having xenophobic, imperialistic attitude. - Thu, 18 Aug 2005 1:29am

I dont believe marijuana is a drug either.

He made over one million dollars in how many years????
Thats not going to last long with the price of lawyers, the american government can put up 50 times that in a heart beat and not flinch.

Think about it if the situation was the opposite. An american sold pot seeds up here and made a mil, so canada wants the states to extradite this hippy to canada and have him spend the rest of his fucking life in the klink, getting reamed nightly because slanging herb SEEDS is a felony. That doesnt make finacial sense for the country first off, international hearings are not cheap. Secondly its not like he went down there and grew the shit for anyone. Pot in some states is still on par with a cocaine felony chrage. I think these US conservitave fucks need to get on with their lives.

I agree there are more important issues than this dude, how bout this one then: Canada as a country not taking any of the USA's bullshit any longer. Thats important to me. I dont hate americans as people, I hate them as a country. Any excuse to fuck with their greedy, self absorbed, goverment fat cats is a good one. Fuck the US. - Thu, 18 Aug 2005 5:00pm

Love the letter in Monday magazine that says "extradite Bush and Cheney to us in Canada to stand trial for War Crimes"
I feel the U.S should arrest the people who purchased the seeds in their country, not Marc Emery. - Fri, 19 Aug 2005 5:56pm

I love.... "Marijuana is not a drugs" hilaaaaarious. I'd so play this show, the DEA coming influencing our country is absolutely disgusting. But its not as bad as it could be. I mean they treat us better than Afghanistan and Columbia and Nicaragua. They are just as selective about what drugs they persecute as we are. The laws aren't that different here as most states but it really comes down to the officer and judge in the case. Like here, some cops will just take your shit and tell you to fuck off, (depending on your and their sex, class, race, sexuality, religion, clothing of course) and others will write down traffic or intent when they fill out their report on your two grams. Marc Emery isnt a criminal. Seeds are not a drug. A knife or a gun is not a crime. The person using them is the criminal. One day the dinos will perish and the laws will change. When we take what he have for granted, terrible things will happen. This is one of those terrible things. - Fri, 19 Aug 2005 6:07pm

I say FUCK AMERICA!! And I'm even from there.

The war on drugs is as big a failure as the war in Iraq. Ok, not quite that much of a disaster. But damn, those clowns thing they are free, when they can't even smoke a joint. They teach propoganda in the schools starting at kindergarten that the United States is the best country in the world, which enjoys more freedoms than any other country on earth. What a crock of shit.

You are mistaken though, a drug dealer could never be exectued, only first degree murderers, unless Mr. bush has changed that too. I've been gone a while... - Mon, 22 Aug 2005 5:24pm

There is more than enough information on these websites for anyone to get a grasp on the situation:

http://www.erowid.org/cannabis - Start here - ALL basic info about cannabis
http://www.cannabisculture.com - News + Updates
http://www.cfdp.ca - Marijuana Law and Reform
http://www.parl.gc.ca/common/Committee_SenRep.asp?Language=E&Parl=37&Ses=1&comm_id=85 - Canadian Senate Report on Marijuana calling for legalization/regulation
http://www.smokeoutamerica.ca - SEPTEMBER 10, RALLY AT THE US CONSULATE IN VANCOUVER, 2PM, 1075 West Pender (email: [email protected])

There are many interesting articles on erowid, including primary data and statistic, information about health effects and anything you need to know.

Marc is not a millionaire. See this forum (http://www.cannabisculture.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1137530&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)to see his financial breakdown, posted by Marc Emery. (scroll down, third post) It was a media spin, in fact those are his gross earnings before expenditure. Why would he ask for money if he had it? Good question, maybe cause he doesn't!

This is a clear political persecution. There are dozens of seed sellers in Canada, the US and Europe. Why only Marc? Because he helped fund almost every pro-marijuana event in North America/Europe for the last decade. He has donated everything for the cause. Marc is #46 of the 50 people on the Drug Enforcement Agencies (DEA) Most Wanted list. marc is the only activist to use his full name, pay taxes to the Canadian government as "Marijuana Seed Vendor". Health Canada directs Medical Marijuana patients to the internet to buy seeds. Type it in Google, and see what comes up first. Canada has given Marcs business tacit approval.

Why should something Canadians approve of, and are signalling motions to legalize (58% of Canadians support legalization, 10 million canadians have tried pot once, 2.5 million are regular users, Stats Canada 2002) and something that the RCMP believe is an 'arrestable offence', and why something our court system has deemed "constitutionally invalid" and something which they are starting to refuse to prosecute, and finally the difference between the penalties in the US and in Canada are so drastically different, that it would be the equivalent of sending someone to a country where they are to be tortured. Life in prison (USA) vs. Not-an-arrestable-offence (CAN) + Clear political persecution. This could stand as precedent that we are subject to US drug laws, when we clearly have a different opinion.

I will be staging this event in the fall sometime. We did not have enough support or time to set up. So I encourage anyone who is interested to read a little bit about the rally (link above) sept. 10 and try to get involved. Marc was the main source of income for activism, so this event is trying to fill that enormous void.

It takes 15 minutes to educate yourself about Marijuana and dispel the myths surrounding Reefer Madness.

If you are interested in a fall show, please post, or email me at [email protected]

Canada needs to police its self. If we give usa the power to invade us to bust us over seeds, just think whats next if they win. That censorship increasing next to canadian music. We need our own souverty, not another country, making its laws for us. If Marc was breaking laws, then why hasnt our rcmp bust him? So why let another country do it. Marc wasnt break the law then, the americans who purchase seeds are the ones who are breaking there government laws, What are those ppl buying seeds for, of course to grow them. Marc offers a service, its those who purchase seeds that are being unlawful. A seed is a seed, A plant comes from a seed, it isnt a plant, till one can grow it. - Wed, 31 Aug 2005 2:29pm

"Marc offers a service, its those who purchase seeds that are being unlawful"
wouldn't that particular service be illegal in the states? and he's providing that "service" to americans and he fully knew selling seeds could land him a comfy spot in a jail at some point in time... and that time is now. It sux that U.s.A policed him up here, but you have to see it from their point too, no matter how naive it is. They see marc(dealer of sorts) selling/traffiking seeds to american citizens... to them, its just as if mark were selling cocaine(which is fucking ridiculous). So in they're eye's its a more than punishable offence. I hope nothing but the best for mark, and i've posted my views on this subject before... here and elsewhere... good luck with the show!!! - Fri, 2 Sep 2005 9:46am
