I only saw Zap play. The description of "summer sun shining on your face" would describe it perfectly. They put on an entertaining show. Who would have guessed that this Good Times rawk band is made up of original Malevolence guitarist (on bass) and Conviction's double bass master on the skins!! And they say metalheads are closeminded musicians. - Sun, 15 Dec 2002 12:49pm

Zappnin was a good ol' dose of rock. Tom's vocals have improved alot! Loran is still one of my favorite drummers around. Overall nice set. The free shirts were a nice touch too.
Iris was tight and cool. Not totally my style, but I could not look away (those who were there are in the know). I would have rather heard more originals than covers as I thought the originals were quite good.
Fun night! Should have been more people there. - Sun, 15 Dec 2002 8:46pm
Butter One word......AWESOME!!! - Tue, 17 Dec 2002 9:43am
JXL I caught the last few songs by Iris. They were really tight and their originals were pretty good. What'd everyone else think?
I wish I could have seen Zappnin play too. - Wed, 18 Dec 2002 1:47am

Not really related to the showcase, but I think that the article Greg Pratt wrote in the most recent Monday about these two groups and the Rocktoria Curse was a fucking joke, and I have serious doubts as to whether or not he believed a single word of what he wrote, especially after listening to the most recent Rocktoria CD.
One is comforted by the thought that bands such as this come and go without ever truly making an impact in any way, but one is also dismayed by the realization of just how much time and energy goes into creating and maintaining these mediocre stabs at bar rock posturing.
Where do old rock bands go when they die? Sunday afternoon blues jams at suburban bar n' grills? - Wed, 18 Dec 2002 10:46am
Onlooker Iris is a well polished nice sounding band but they just don't have **IT**, Ellen is a wonderful singer but really boring in my opinion. Zappnin Black sound good and are really tight but as well do not stand out. - Wed, 18 Dec 2002 1:13pm
joshy atomic well, I was sober for Zappnin Black and they were pretty dandy, pretty much just strait forward college rock I thought. I usually think that those shows are boring but itwas ok cause the drummer kept me entertained with his banter etc. Music sucked though. I'm pikcy. Fuck off. Iris was AWFUL. people should take note on specific songs not to cover. Sheryl Crow should have been a fucking hint not to cover guns n roses. My god people never fucking learn. I hope that girl chokes next time she wants to mutilate a good song.
Stab her in the face. Please
Love Joshy - Wed, 18 Dec 2002 3:50pm
Anonymous -I thought Zappnin Black was a refreshing change from what is going on in the 'scene' right now. Them boys certainly can rock. Iris is a good band, but did'nt tickle me fancy. - Wed, 18 Dec 2002 4:28pm

Donnie, cool site! Love the Brother Goose section, bro! Reading that makes me feel like I'm hanging at the booth in The Fox chatting with you and having a big, cold beer with strippers all around. - Thu, 16 Jan 2003 6:35pm
Ivan Hlinka go to the comics section, "Queen for a day", is the best. Great music too. - Thu, 16 Jan 2003 8:24pm

Both these bands are, in my humble opinion, BOOOORING. iRiS writes hookless little pop bonbons that clock in at over 5 minutes, ZB seem to try too hard to be ROCKIN'. Neither band could grow a hook between them and both are on the completely bogus "live" Rocktoria CD (complete with non credited overdubs, especially the iRiS). By the way, don't underestimate the "Rocktoria curse" out of over 40 bands to participate less than 10 of them have gone on to do ANYTHING afterwards. That's as in NOTHING. (Remember Mustard Punt anyone?). iRiS have now apparently moved to Van to make it big: Godspeed sez I. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 3:08pm
Johnny Black Strictly out of curiosity, at which point(s) does it appear that we try too hard to be rockin'? As a member of ZB, I take pride in the quality of our songs, and the effort we put into a show. Granted, we can improve in a number of areas, but that is what rehersal, internal band meetings, and continuous live performances are for. You are entitled to your opinion of the rocktoria cd, but it has been nothing but a positive experience for me, and I assume my band mates. We take the good with the bad as all musicians/bands do. I look forward to your response. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 5:03pm
Anonymous Don't worry about it Johnny and Donnie, Scott Henderson is a jealous washup that has a fucking 2x4 up his ass and whines and complains about everything. I bet he actually thinks that he is always right and everyone else is the one with the problem. I've never met the guy but I read his pathetic whining posts all the time. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 5:18pm
Q Deathwish I wouldn't hate IRIS so much if the Q would stop playing their fucking song twice a day, every day, since I don't know when. Unfortunately I have to listen to the Q at work and its hard to block out. It sounds like Shanie and is almost annoying as that Down the Road song by Connely whoever. - Fri, 7 Feb 2003 6:09pm
Donnie Black Gee Scott, wow!
How can anyone try TO hard to rock? It's not like we're throwin' pozes like Dokken for chrisakes!
I've never seen you at one of our showz, so what the fuck would you know anyway?

OK OK so maybe I was a tad insensitive in my critisisms of ZB> A LOT of people have taken me to task for this and many have assured me that ZB is a great band. You're right, I've never been to see them live, but, assuming that the Rocktoria disc is a reasonable representation of their live show, they are just not my cup of eggnog. Perhaps it's the proximity to the other "artists" on the Rocktoria farce, perhaps it's just the preponderance of the piccolo snare drum (my least favorite instrument in rock music), perhaps it's just the name. Certainly the photos in the booklet made it look as if the band were trying awfully hard to be rockin' (I call it "the pain of the universe is in my guitar" syndrome). I will indeed check out the Black next chance I get, though it will be hard as this "washed up has been" is rather busy playing in 3 different bands, preparing to tour Western Canada once again, and recording more projects than everyone else in town combined (at least that see the light of day). Also, I LIKE the 2 x 4 up my ass. Seriously, being a pro musician means having to grow a thick skin when it comes to criticism. My judgement on ZB came after hearing the Rocktoria CD about 3 times (all I could stand of it); a truly close minded person wouldn't have listened at all. I have close friends who HATE my music and say so; often they have the most ridiculous reasons, it doesn't make any difference to me. Hell, my WIFE wouldn't know one of my records if you played one to her. I always reserve the right to change my mind about something, who wouldn't; maybe I'll see ZB live and love them, who knows. It is true, however, that you are judged by the company you keep and I still think iRiS is the least interesting band I've heard in a while. P.S. Donnie; did you guys do any overdubs on your tracks on the Rocktoria CD? Just Curious. - Thu, 20 Feb 2003 1:24pm
Donnie Black Hey man, everyone's entitled to an opinion.
I just find it amusing how my band gets lumped into the same pile of shit that most everyone thinks is Rocktoria. Guilty by association I guess.
I'm happy to say that we got a solid recording out of the deal, and for us, they've been fuckin great.
Over dubs? Sure, I love Unleashed in the East too.
I've never been everyone's cup of tea, and I don't like much of anything that's come out of this town. (No Means No is the exception) I don't listen to your shit either.
Call me boring, call me what you will. Enjoy your beer. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 1:37pm

That is one of the best comebacks I have heard yet on this board. Well spoken L. - Fri, 21 Feb 2003 8:06pm
shuvelwhat? hrmmmm....
i could say alot but ill try to keep it short
if you cant say something nice about a band thats trying hard to entertain and obviously has fun doing it then you miss the point of rock&roll in whatever form its played
ZP is trying hard to write fun music
i used to play with Donnie black and we wrote music that ended up being angrier than he was so he took a new direction and puts his heart into it!
thats good enough for me....ive seen the zapsters and i was entertained quite nicely thank you
these guys play with a certain *AHEM* ...conviction if i dare say and that rules...fun in the sun music is that rocks is missing in all the nay sayers pissy little lives
they just dont get it(do ya scott?) cheers CC - Sat, 22 Feb 2003 1:38am
Anonymous yep yep - Sat, 22 Feb 2003 1:55am
Donnie Black Thanks dood!
I actually had a blast when I helped Snif record some tunes at the Sea of Shit. I enjoyed the import beers and the European tour stories too.
Maybe it slapped me in the face when I was called boring. As far as I'm concerned, I (myself) make up for any sort of boredom that may creep into what I express. (It's not what I'm sayin', it's what I'm doin' when I say it.)
Whatever floats someone's boat, may sink anothers. Since when have I cared? Maybe I was hungover when I read the thread. Quite possibly I coulda still been stoned.
I'm stuck in 1984, and I'm the first to admit it. To each his own. Just watch out if I'm dancin'.

Anonymous oh yeah ....
ac/dc has been writing the same fuckin song for 30 years and people dig it
so fuck this bullshit about originality and being fresh and new....the real critics are music fans not musicians anyways
lets not forget the ramones who rule(d) ......
mostly rehashed melodies from the 50's and did they sound shitty?...hell no
better not play the drums man......cavemen did that already
hah!..... - Sat, 22 Feb 2003 8:29pm

OK, OK I should point out that this thread is a review for a show that I didn't go to so I guess I should just go see ZB and then I can chuck my 2 cents worth in.I will admit that I'm "the most opinionated man in Victoria" (dp smith's quote and I PLAY with the guy) so next time I'll try to have more information at my fingertips when I decide to shoot my mouth off. OK? - Mon, 24 Feb 2003 2:01am
