What does everyone think of mp3s? Copying artists' work and trading them for others? file sharing and shit like that..

I particularly want to hear from musicians and the like.

I think i've hit some kind of inner conflict here... - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 2:33pm

I've been MP3ing for 5 and a half years. It's a good way to promote your band, and it's really easy to do. - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 4:14pm

hahaha!

no really though. is promotion better than making money off albums? what's the use of putting out albums if nobody's heard of you? and what;s the point of putting out an album if you know it's going to get copied and passed around gratuit?

WTF? - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 6:09pm

this is such a popular topic to bicker about..and musicians have alot of good points to add..but some people live at home and have jobs and spend all their money on cds. good stuff. but there are people that live alone and have to support themselves and some people have kids and some people cant afford to be buying all these over priced cds of all their favorite artists..d rather buy cds from local bands and download the mainstream stuff because i cant afford to pay 10-20 bucks a cd.

either way..i know musicians who think that mp3 sites are a great way to spread their music. - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 6:28pm

I dunno, I mean you gotta look at it numerous ways. Yeah true, it might get copied and passed around, but don't artists make money off T-Shirt sales and concerts?!? I mean what's the difference between that and radio airplay?!? And do you put out an album because you enjoy playing music, or cause you wanna make money?!? I can see it from some artists perspective, an artist deserves to get paid for the hard work they've done, and I'm in total agreement, but if it wasn't for MP3 I would of never known about certain artists (like 311 for instance). And if it wasn't for the fact the Audioslave sessions got leaked (and played on 107.7 The End) then you would of never seen that album.

Speaking of... seems someone posted AK-47's new CD to the punk newsgroup! :) - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 6:34pm

While we are in favour of people downloading our music as a way of promotion, we also do sell a lot of CD's while we are on tour.
MP3's are an excellent way to promote your band and get people to check out your CD and buy a shirt and go see you live that normally wouldn't because they have never heard of you. - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 1:26am

And most metal CD's are worth buying becuase of the packaging...

Point is, make the package worth buying. Sound quality is better on a CD (some don't care) but add in a really good visual package, maybe stickers or crusty panties or something that you can't get by downloading... - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 4:11am

Bands don't get paid, management does. I mean in all honesty, how many artists have been paid ever since the levy on blank media came into play a few years ago? A majority of that revenue is lost in red tape. Now i might be wrong about this, but if anyone can prove me wrong otherwise, I'll always stick with this attitude. Now I'm not saying it's right to download music, cause really it isn't, but here's a good example. I had the new Meatlocker Seven CD in MP3 format month's before it was released onto CD, but when the CD was finally released I was first in line to buy it :) - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 4:19am

A lot of people arent like that though, Griph. I think you are right about bands not making big $ off of records, though. It seems to me that most of those dollars go towards the publishers/management/label. And I deffinately agree that the way to get people to buy the record is to package it with good stuff. When was the last time you got a poster with your cd?

Funny, it was actually while burning a copy of an Ak-47/H.M. that i had to stop and think. I think the last AK show i was at Tony was selling tapes for like 4 bucks and cds for like 8... or something. fucking cheap anyway.

The thing is that i can burn a copy for my friend(s), and if they like it then i might talk them into seeing a show (where local bands are garunteed tp make oodles of money). Then there might be merch there to be bought. I guess it's a balancing act.. like anything else.

I didnt know there was a punk (binary?) newsgroup... - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 6:33am

This arguement is as old as the hills. In the late 60's the concern was that cassettes would destroy the record industy because of illegal copying (anybody remember the "Home Taping is Killing Music" logo?). Prior to the invention of the cassette the UK musicians union was of the (mistaken) opinion that radio play would eat into record sales and imposed the concept of "needle time" which was how often a given song could be played on the radio (we got the Peel sessions as a result of the BBC trying to find a loophole in this ridiculous rule, which lasted well into the '70's). Now we have mp3's which are, quality wise, to the CD what cassettes were to the LP, that is just the audio at a quality level that is noticably inferior to the original and with cover art, lyrics etc. I found on a related (metal) thread on this board a discussion by people who had downloaded a long awaited new release and who were simply waiting for the official version to come out so they could buy it. This seems to be quite common, especially amongst ardent enthusiasts. I never use downloads because when I buy a CD I don't want to be already sick of it. As for the copying levy, as a member of SOCAN I can assure you that my SOCAN royalties haven't gone up one iota since the "levy" (can't call it a tax) came in yet the levy now forces me to spend upwards of $500 a year just to promote my own music and the music of my friends, none of which is commercially released. One would think that the massive revenue from the copying levy would offset the losses created by illegal downloading (and would show up, however incrementally, in my SOCAN cheques) but the industry says no. And the NHL keeps insisting that it's losing money too. I submit that they are all greedy liars. Because of the absolute glut of music out there now I would guess that the vast majority of musicians don't care if you download their stuff or not; it's sufficient that you are listening to it at all. - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 7:01am

OK

To me it's simple, if you are in music for the money then do the things that make money.

Once anything is recorded and out of your hands ("released"), there is nothing stopping people from copying/downloading all they want. It's just obvious. - Fri, 23 Jan 2004 7:45am

This website explains my position on downloaded music, know your enemy! But if that don't make ya think, perhaps a quote is needed here, this time from Ian MacKaye who plays in bands like Fugazi and Dischord.

So the idea that somebody in wherever, whether they're in a small town somewhere in the middle of america or in Pakistan or whatever, if they're interested, and they want to check out Fugazi, I want it out there. I don't want them to have to pay some service to get to it and listen to it and hopefully that would compel them to do further research. I mean, how cool would it be to know that there's some kid in Pakistan who downloaded all our records and listens to them all the time-- I'm happy, I don't give a damn. I mean the argument against it is always just monetary, and again, that's the least interesting aspect of music for me.

i found it too. i use xnews though. i just pulled a record by 'the pleasure fuckers'. good stuff!

OOOPS! I guess it was a trap after all.

i think i've come to a decision. if you're making music, it shouldn't be just about the money. you gotta have other reasons or you're a hollow bastard. and.. publicity is better. i think you're better off to have 30 people download and know your album by heart than to sell half as many records. there's still that element of 'stealing the bread & butter off the tables of the musicians', but yea, if i rip off an album and i like it, then there's a good chance i'll buy another of that band's records if i see it. that's just the kinda guy i am - Sat, 24 Jan 2004 7:42am

For me playing music ain't about money. It's about the passion to do it and the rush of live performance.
Downloaded stuff doesn't equal store bought in quality. Also I'd rather have all the goodies that come with a official release than a rip of something.
When I go see a show if the band has a disk I'll try and buy one so the money is more likely to end up in the groups pocket. - Sat, 24 Jan 2004 11:56am

MP3s are your friend.

For the majority of bands, the live show is where you'll make some bucks [and t-shirts, buttons (lots of profit in buttons), panties, bonuses from the bar for exceding booze sales (it can happen, talk to the manager when you set up your show, demand it)].

MP3s is how people will know you are the shiznit. Think when you tour across BC all the radio stations are glob onto your brand of Goth/Dance, no...but with some creative networking useing MP3s, all the little Goth/Dance kids will be waiting for your dilapitated bus to roll into town.

Indie rockers...put all your music on your website for download (or at least stream)...I don't care about deep lyrics or well worded bios if I don't care about the music. Maybe if its all that, I'll visit the online store and buy a t-shirt and pass the link on to my friends. - Mon, 26 Jan 2004 2:30pm
