The documentary is blended with elements of music video and journey's into diverse neighborhoods in Toronto during a year when guns, rap and crime were topics at the top of everybody's mind. While investigating the underground rap world, a critique of mainstream media also emerges. With Toronto's surge in gun crime during 2005 some people have pointed the finger at rap music and the gansta culture it may inspire. Has the attention on gansta rap overshadowed the many positives of a complex hip hop culture? Does rap or media glamorization of violence play any part in influencing crime on the streets? The Toronto Rap Project believes a direct link between rap music and violence should NOT be made. However, while shooting The Toronto Rap Project, director Richard Budman did discover that if you take impressionable youth devoid of education and job opportunity, raised without the moral pillars provided by parents - then throw Gangsta rap into that mix, it can have a negative effect on impressionable youth. The Toronto Rap Project features high profile interviews from politicians, police, and the media. The documentary tells the story from the point-of-view of the rapper - the ones who truly understand and appreciate the complex urban hip hop culture. There are rappers featured in the documentary that some people may find offense. After all, reality of life is not always a pretty picture for everybody. But freedom of speech and expression are cornerstones of a thriving democracy - even if it means being exposed to speech and images some may find offensive. The Toronto Rap Project travels through many areas in Toronto in search of answers. From downtown Toronto, to the challenged neighborhoods of Jane-Finch, Parkdale, and Cataraqui Park in Scarborough, to the much debated 50 Cent concert in Toronto. Rap star 50 Cent made a lot of news in Toronto during 2005. When Liberal MP Dan McTeague suggested not allowing 50 Cent into Canada to perform - it set off a firestorm of debate around rap music and specifically the gun and gang imagery in much of today's mainstream rap. Was 50 Cent somehow to blame for the spike in gun crime in the city? Would his appearance in Canada trigger impressionable youth to want to get a gun? The Toronto Rap Project poses these very questions to the fans attending the concert. The Real Toronto is an underground DVD that was much discussed in the media and by politicians in 2005. The Toronto Rap Project interviews emcee George Reefah and his 5 Deutsche crew who made a controversial appearance in The Real Toronto. Reefah feels the DVD shows an accurate reflection of life in some Toronto projects. While 5 Deutsche do not promote gun use, they can't deny that firearms are a fact of life for many in the Jane-Finch neighborhood they rep. As for their appearance in The Real Toronto, Reefah say it as a chance to promote his music, "and the editing did the rest." The Toronto Rap Project asks of it's subjects (and viewers) two main questions. How safe are you feeling in Toronto?
