Lucky Bar User Info... | Columbia recording artists AMEN come to Victoria. Metal, punk with a little glam thrown in for good measure. Amens founder and front man Casey Chaos has never been an artist to do things by half measures or compromise on his musical vision. After self-releasing his bands debut album Slave in 1995, he signed on the dotted line with Roadrunner Records for their major label self-titled debut in 1999. Things turned sour and the band was consequently dropped. Virgin Records soon picked up the band for their sophomore major label release We Have Come For Your Parents in 2001, before being dropped once again under controversial terms (Not before recording another album for the label, which is unlikely to ever see the light of day any time soon according to the label). In the last eighteen months, Chaos even lost his entire band due to inactivity. But like the survivor Chaos is, he self funded this new release (With credit cards and favours), played everything himself, and found a home for it on System Of A Downs Daron Malakian Columbia Records new imprint label EatURMusic. Everything mentioned before has obviously had an influence on Chaos, and while theres a certain familiarity with Death Before Musick, theres also a slight variation from the Amen sound of old throughout the albums fifteen tracks. The short introduction of sorts number Liberation For... is classic Amen with Chaos in full repetitive rant and simplistic guitars, while Hello (One Chord Lovers) and the single Californias Bleeding are just as stunning with the seething angered delivery and the hint of melody within the razor edged lyrical content and thick guitar tones. The first real hint of anything different from the past occurs in the Sex Pistols/The Dead Kennedys punk infused influence in the short and sharpish The Abolishment Of Luxury, We Got The Bait, Bring Me The Heads and the John Lydon like delivery of Sorry, Not Sorry. The metal sound isnt abandoned entirely for the punk embracement, with tracks such as Money Infection, the melodic duo of Neutron Liars and Oblivion Stereo (Either are sure to be future singles), F*** In LA and the amazing pick of the album Please Kill Me. The slight stoner groove of Exterminate! works far better than it sounds on paper, but Westwood Fallout and The Summer Of Guns are the albums real forgettable moments. Death Before Musick is not as consistent as We Have Come For Your Parents, but the fact that Chaos has picked up the remaining pieces of Amen, fought to have the album released (In the face of financial ruin and in defiance of major record labels) in true D.I.Y. fashion and made some subtle changes from the familiar Amen sound (Punk and plenty of anger) makes it all worthwhile. Also: Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking. LA poser nu-metal shite, right? Dead wrong. I defy you to show me a metalcore band that packs the amount of punch that Amen has. Featuring a revolving door of misanthropes led by Casey Chaos, one of the better mouthpieces in heavy music, this band has single-handedly creamed the jeans of every rock writer in Europe, and for good reason. Okay, their MTV single "California's Bleeding" sounds like a genetically modified LA Guns, but that's why they call it a single, dude. The rest of the album pounds the senses with killer breakdowns, vocal damage, and shout-outs to the radical dissenters, skid dirtbags and misunderstood teen angst goth kids in towns of under 1,000. Say what you will about mainstream rock, corporate sellout, blah blah blah, but there's a song on here ("The Abolishment of Luxury") that sounds like Faster Pussycat meets Minor Threat, and you can't ask for much more in life than that. Lucky Bar User Info... | Unfortunately, the lead singer of AMEN fucked himself up onstage in Japan. Their tour is on hold for now. If you bought a ticket please get a refund at place of purchase. My apologies, I am disappointed myself. Ben. - Wed, 18 Aug 2004 1:23am | ||
