ok, i'm finally feeling hopeful after months of just feeling dragged down, so this may get wordy. If it annoys any of you bitchy types, my tip is to LOOK AWAY.

I helped friends move all day so I got to the show late & tired and missed Acantha, a thrash band from Edmonton? Its what their profile says. Heard they were pretty good. This from the doorguy who I usually don't believe (ha!), but some others too.

Chosen is a new around here but I think they've been around in Ireland for a while and picked up Johnny (ex of Assimilator & Mudlark) on vocals. I've always liked him, he's got good chops and he gives it his all - you can always hear him raging some intense personal beefs in his vocals - even with these songs that aren't even his own. And he's got a knack for engaging the crowd in a way that isn't annoying or trying too hard, which isn't so common. About the music, they've got this in their bio: "Crossing the groove of Meshuggah with overt Death and Nevermore influences, their demos to date have been nothing short of impressive." Terrorizer Magazine, but I didn't hear that. However, I'm not one to have a clue either. http://www.chosen.ie

And you've gotta love a band that gives props out to JOHN THE SOUNDGUY!!! I cannot say enough about John... definately among the top couple of sound techs in town and definately one of THE coolest people you'll ever meet.
I liked how a couple weeks ago someone (who's probably had john do sound for his bands for about 7 years at the bar) addressed him as "mr soundguy?". haha.... you DORK.

Abriosis was really fucking good - fast heavy tight spazztic, I guess. Really busy."Death/thrash/grind" is what it says and it looks like 2 of the guys were in Civil Ruin before. I ran into an old friend who's in my opinion got excellent taste in music and was part of my absolute favorite local hardcore band, and he thought they killed and bought an Abriosis t-shirt and cd. He definately leans towards the more progressive and has high expectations as far as musicianship goes, and the band fits the bill in all these ways.
And I was talking to some of my favorite (older) death/grind players there and I could see them all stop and take note as soon as the band started, so thats a sure sign that they're scared, haha. kidding.
Apparently the band are mildly retarded (metalheads) though, cuz their weblink says this: "[email protected]"
But I fixed it. :)
http://www.myspace.com/abriosis Well worth a listen!

Gross Misconduct headlined, and of course I'm a bit of a longtime fan. I thought they played a little differently last night,or maybe it was just me since I was tired. It might have been because they were squeezing 4 bands on the night, or maybe because it had already been a pretty full night of decent metal, but I thought they kinda plowed through their set. Not that they didn't do a pretty great job (because they are a pretty great band!), but I really like listening to each of the players so it changed things for me a bit. I like when they have a little room to breathe. My old buddy was impressed by the drummer's technique (himself being fast, unique-styled drummer) and us both by the bass player's FNM Angeldust t-shirt! Anyway, still really stoked on gm, can't see any upcoming shows though.

Finally, I got 4 flyers all for the same thing... september 29 or something at the cobalt? thanks, shouldn't even need to flier for that one... me, anyway. - Sun, 31 Aug 2008 1:17pm Edited: Sun, 31 Aug 2008 1:32pm
