OK, Link Wray has had his ass not only kissed but idolized by the likes of Townsend, Beck, Berry, Page, Presley, Dale, Hendrix, Vincent, and anyone with an ear for hectic raw guitar...He literally manifested the power chord, and a line between nice and nasty in terms of guitar.
He was and is one of the most definitive musicians of our time, and still blows away crowds everywhere he goes...
This is his only Canadian date, and we're so proud to have him play at the legendary Yale.
Backing Link, is another amazing power trio, Derek Miller...
Ziggy Stardust meets Howlin Wolf. Holy shit they rock... The songwriting is so genuine, and pure. Manic and dangerous, full of life.
The reason we bring them together is threefold...
Derek makes a point of putting Link in so much of what he does..
They are both first nation pioneers.
And this one time affair will be shot and recorded by an award winning film crew in high def for upcoming special releases.
DO NOT MISS THIS EARLY SHOW!!! - Thu, 30 Jun 2005 4:18am

Do you guys not know who this is????

"There are those who claim that Link Wray invented heavy metal, an accusation based on his 1958 million-seller "Rumble", an intense, moody guitar instrumental intended to capture the feel of a gang fight. This brilliantly simple track has influenced everyone from The Kinks down to PJ Harvey, and it set the essential Link Wray style - rather than a lead line, Wray favoured a slow drag across distorted strings in an elementary chord progression. Though he was capable of more dextrous playing, Wray was a visionary who understood that, in rock, simplicity was best. "

Fucken rights!! I was fortunate enough to see this living legend at Richards in 1999... I do believe (it mighta been 2000). Whatever... it was a magical night: Link and his band played all of his classics (variations of "Rumble" three times) to one of the most diverse crowds of music lovers I had ever seen. There were, of course, greasers a plenty, but as true testament to Link's vast influence, there were a pile of metal heads, punks, and dudes who are no doubt peers of 60 somethin' parents payin' homage. I haven't been over to Van. for a show since last fall... seein' as this might be my last chance to hear this legend I may hafta hit it again.... If you dig old school rock and roll, rockabilliy, surf, western swing, hell any music with power chords, you will not be disappointed.... - Sat, 2 Jul 2005 6:20pm

Ok, looks like word's finally getting out about this show. Why people are asking ME about it, I don't know!
I only know whats in the show listing and whats here. Oh, and a friend just told me that he went by the Yale and they said there's no advance tickets - there never were - get 'em at the door.

He also told me about a guy in town here, Cal from Uber Sissy, who was such a big fan that he made LW a guitar and surprised him with it right before that show in '99. Someone's gotta make sure he finds out about the show!

I kinda feel honored to be going... I've never seen him before. - Tue, 5 Jul 2005 5:20pm

Its this afternoon!
Wow, this'll be wierd.. I can't even remember the last time I was ever at the Yale. 3 people I talked to, or talked with their friends about said they'd probably be hanging out with LW.
I may not know any famous people, but maybe I know a lot of people who know famous people? - Sun, 10 Jul 2005 7:49am

Holy CRAP what a messed up evening!
Quite a few people got there at 4. I HEARD people say when I walked in that LW was at the border. Then Derek Miller played their set. Ran in to tons of people I hadn't seen in ages. Then there was this reaaaally long delay. I noticed a ton of older people and how gorgeous that room is, despite being filled with Jak (HAHAHAHA NOTICE THE HAHA'S). Then I HEARD someone say that he was at least an hour and a half away.. that was around 8 maybe. So people left (cuz they had other plans or work scheduled), or left to go drink elsewhere or get some air. People were getting right fucked up by then, drinking since 4. I had to be a bitch to someone who'd gotten way too hammered and demanding.

Anyway, I just stood outside talking with people about their old LW stories, and checking out people's records & memorabilia they'd braught with them, and watching old people leave. Then the opening band (thats who I was told it was cuz I stayed outside) got up and started doing LW covers. Then I watched people getting mad and walking out. Then someone came out saying that LW had been stopped at the border on account of one of the guys in the band having a 30 yr old impaired charge. Somehow LW was strip searched in the process (isn't he in his late 70's?) and had been (a little rattled, was my impression) by it. He was intending to make it down and do a couple of songs, but they thought it better he rest, and instead rescheduled the show to tomorrow at 7pm.

So they finally announced all the rumors I'd heard, from the stage, and it came off pretty cool, pretty pro. So I finally left around 10. There was a pretty long lineup of people waiting to settle things at the door before they headed out, but in the end, people seemed fairly understanding, all things considered.

what a bummer. Hope it happens tomorrow, and hope some of those old guys (and people who took the day off etc) make it back out. And hope that people who I thought I'd see there and didn't, maybe get to see him too.

EDIT 4:46pm 7/11
**** RESCHEDULED SHOW WILL NOT BE HAPPENING ****

I didn't want to draw more attention to this thread (thats why I just edited in that last line), but now I do. Mostly cuz I'm getting phone calls.

I wrote what I had heard going around the bar last night, some of which I don't actually know to be true - and I made sure to specify that.

I'm not going to add what I heard after the fact cuz there are ONE HELL of a lot of rumors flying around, and I suspect that most of them are incorrect. I would hope that people wouldn't believe any of it til it all comes out in the wash. I know I'm not gonna. People are already slamming the promoter(s) and the bar, without any proof of what the actual circumstances were that they were dealing with. Give 'em a freakin' break!!

Again, according to 2 phonecalls to the bar this afternoon (thats the extent of my evidence), the rescheduled show will NOT be happening this evening. - Mon, 11 Jul 2005 2:29pm
