Message Board > Show Reviews > Sounds of Summer - Barber, Debussy, Schumann, Popper & Marcello (Victoria Conservatory) |
Akylore User Info... | Wow....well, for a 'sounds of summer' festivity this cello and piano duo was pretty epic if you ask me!! Paul Marleyn (cellist) and Silvia Fraser (pianist) seemed to feed off each other quite intensely during all the pieces, there were tumultuous periods (especially during the Barber piece) followed up by melodic, epic compositions. The Debussy piece was exteremely technical, he was switching between plucking his cello and literally "shredding" on it. I have to say my jaw almost hit the floor 3 times, when I heard that there was an armed uprising during the time when Schumann wrote the fantasy piece performed (Schumann found 14 corpses in his backyard,) I had a lot of imagery going on through my head when I heard the piece performed. Like as if his desperation to flee the bloodshed to reach his village in refuge could be felt during the piece. This was a serious display of progresive, technical, symphonic doom. The 'Hungarian Rhapsody' had some very uplifting moments, a lot of odd scales giving a very "power-metal-esque" feeling. If I wasn't busy tomorrow I would so be hitting the Saturday performance, there's one more on August 7th as well (I will definitely be hitting that!) Some of the best underrated music is being performed here if you ask me...check it out... - Sat, 31 Jul 2004 12:21am | ||
