darcy User Info... | what is the sound like? what sort of sounds does it have? what sort of effects? is the pressure sence any good? - Sat, 10 Jul 2004 8:53pm | ||
moron User Info... | The Korg M1 is if not *the*, one of the best selling synths of all time. It is of mid 80s or so vintage and is credited as being the first true work station synthesizer. It includes (I believe) an 8 track sequencer, some basic effects and PCM based sounds. The architecture is pretty straight forward and like most digital synths of that era, does not have resonant filters. Also, I think the sampling rate is 32kHz so it is a little dull on the high end. The ROM will be pretty small so not a lot of sounds (a drum kit or two, piano, guitar, strings, synth waveforms plus some efx loops) but it does have the same kinda stuff that you would find on a general midi synth (though it is pre-general midi). I'm not sure how many effects blocks it has but it does at least have reverb and I think it is about the same effects set as found on the Wavestation. A bread and butter synth, good beginning synth if you are *not* looking for (virtual) analog or weird noises. The sounds will not compare with anything current as far as realism is concerned of course but then again $400 barely gets you a keyboard controller of that size, let alone some sounds and basic sequencing. Dirk User Info... | moron hit the nail on the head - the sounds are solid; I've found this to be a very useful board. It doesn't have all the glitz of new workstations in the $2500+ range, but it certainly does the job. Sequencer is handy, FX range from good to excellent (32 of them I think, all stereo... Reverbs, delays, flange/phase/chorus, rotary, drive/distortion, excitation, EQ...), extra outputs are nice, and programming is comprehensive. As far as sounds go, the factory presets sound somewhat dated, lots of bread-and-butter sounds to be sure (I've found it quite useful for working on films) - Piano, organ, strings, basses, horns, woodwinds, choirs, synth, and it's awesome for pads. The real reward with this thing comes from programming - you can get some awesome sounds out of it. This suits me fine too, since using the factory presets of any synth doesn't really appeal to me much anyways. The lack of a resonant filter (it does have a non-resonant filter) is a drwaback, and you need to be creative to recreate that feel (the phaser is actually pretty good for LFO-filter sweep sounds), but when you own a handful of other analog boards, it's not hard to live without. The other great thing about the M1 is that it's built like a tank - I would trust it gig after gig after gig. And moron is right about the controller kb, I paid $375 for a plasticky 49-key controller not so long ago. The case that goes with this thing is a monster, too, and cost me $150 alone.
