Emailing and phone calls are your best bet, then just showing up and demanding to see the manager works sometimes too. Try thursday's, soundgarden, Cambie Nanaimo, uhhhh...thursday's.... figure it out. Also, email bands you want to play gigs with and ask about future shows. Believe it or not, annoying people this way produces results every now and again. Yeah, also find the cats who run the all ages scene here and email their crusty asses. They're always good about pinning their financial hopes on nobody bands from bumfuck nowhere who haven't played any shows. That's how I got started way back when anyway. Trust me this works, just keep bugging people. This also works - actually email bands who advertise for a show and need a band, don't just leave your number on the post board.
